I read that in the 17th century and before a cause of death was "Planet", indicating that their stars were bad at that time. Apparently it was not an uncommon explanation.

Liz 47 Report 19 Apr 2010 17:17

From a parish register -

1652 – OCT 26

ALFIRE - Margaret of honest parentage in Sussex. Servant to Thomas Furminger died having been formerly deflowered by Anthony Larkin at Lingfield, fell into labour Oct 24 at night, and God knows by what unhappy neglect or means, died before morning, being delivered of a man child which she confessed at point of death was begot by the said Anthony Larkin : she was buried in Crowhurst churchyard between 7 and 8 pm. The child thus inlawfully begat by Anthony Larkin through neglect died also unbaptised and was buried Nov 7 near the mother in the churchyard, a shameful business God knows.

In the margin –
Thomas Furmingers maid died 25th Oct in the am.

In the graveyard at Winchester Cathedral, there is the gravestone of a soldier who died from "drinking small beer when hot" sounds reasonable to me!!!

I have one that was hanged that goes on to say . The hangman, George
"Throttler " Smith was a man of few words. He placed the noose around his neck and muttered "Goodbye" - and launched him into eternity. Pat
