Anyone read this writing?

Could somebody please decipher this writing on my g. g. grandmother's birth certificate? I can only read the Mother's name (1st line), which is "Jane Yarnold", and the 3rd line "of Kidderminster". Can anyone make out the Mother's Maiden name (2nd line) and/or the address? Any help would be much appreciated! bandwidth exceeded :(

Could try and help you but I can't get anywhere with the website address you give. What is it again? Su

I can read down to Union Workhouse, Swallow Road then its all blank. Are you sure its Yarnold? Looks like Jane Garnold. The second line is Factory Hand I think. I thought it said T H Hope, Master, above Union Workhouse

I have your page on another window and I can see the following. Jane Yarnold Factory Hand or formally Laud of Kidderminster J H Hope Warden (I think) Union Workhouse Sutton Road

Giles has only put part of the certificate online I assume this is to comply with copyright restrictions.

Heather, The 2nd line is meant to be the Mother's maiden name, but I think you're right; it must say Factory Lane, which explains the 3rd line. However, I don't understand why she has an address in that section, and a 2nd address in the other section!? Is the informant different? What does the 2nd line under informant say? I purposely cropped the image, and that's all the text there is.. I'm surprised the address has no house number, or anything. Anyway, thanks for checking it out! It does indeed look like "Union Workhouse". I thought the bottom part said Sutton Road? I will check for a Willow Road...

No when I looked again it looks like Factory Hand of Kidderminster. Not sure if it is Sutton Road, arent there too many letters after the possible t's? If you look at the r at the end of the words master and Kidderminster, doesnt it look like that at the end of the road under Workhouse?

Wow, you've found a webpage for that Union workhouse place! On all my other birth certificates, the informant is always the Mother, so what signifcance does the "Master of Union Workhouse" have with my g. g. grandmother's birth ( 1884)? I don't really understand why that informant has come into it... Would anyone like to explain? Many thanks for the link Christina Sutton (of all names). :)

Nevermind... Thanks Liz! You've answered my question... Looking more closely at the webpage, it says I can apply for records, so that's interesting! I might find out more about my ancestor... Thanks for all your help!!

Hi Jim, I think the Mother was born in 1848 (not sure). Yeah, it could be that one... How will I ever know?

Heather

Heather Report 28 Oct 2004 15:03

Thanks Giles, we all enjoyed that one! Good job you know its Yarnold though!

Hi Jim, Where can I view that 1881 Census return? Jane's partner was meant to be a Spanish man (I doubt he will be on there). I'm just reading up on Union Workhouses in my book; could Jane have been in that place as early as 1881, before she had her child? In the 1901 Census, Kidderminster Workhouse is listed under "Institution Search".

Jim, Also, I made a mistake... it can't be 1848 because these are the only births registered for "Jane Yarnold":- Surname First name(s) District Vol Page ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Births Sep 1853 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ YARNOLD Jane St Pancras 1b 95 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Births Jun 1859 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ YARNOLD Jane Basford 7b 126 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Births Dec 1860 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ YARNOLD Jane Worcester 6c 266 It has to be this Worcestershire entry, so she would be around 21 in 1881.

FreeBMD obviously doesn't have all the births transcribed from that period. Therefore, those people could indeed be my ancestors, but there's no certain way of knowing :( That birth certificate doesn't really help much because Sarah was illegitimate. Apart from applying for those Union Workhouse records, does anyone have any other ideas or search techniques for verifying my ancestor Jane Yarnold? The household at 7 Cross Street does seem like a good match, but I wouldn't like to guess for certain. Cheers for the info anyway!
