Natalie, Bear with ancestry ok.. they add stuff all the time and if you subscribed for the full year you will be fulfilled ok trust me.... i thought that at first too however i have found loads of stuff... just give it a bit more time to add stuff

Natalie, When you are doing a search if you make sure you have clicked on'Exact Matches Only' with a blue background to the search screen, and NOT 'Best Matches' with a yellow background, it will be easier to go through the results that you get up (there will be less of them but more likely to be what you are looking for). The date of birth n the later death entires on Ancestry, ar from the actual death cert. I have husbands grandfather, on his cert it states about 1914. on Ancesty it states 0 1914

Regarding the death cert and date of birth info - how on earth can anybody check? There is no complete computerised system for the indexes, let alone the actual certificates, which is where the date of birth is recorded. nell

I signed up for a week on pay per view, just for the 1871 and 1891 censuses. £7.05 inc tax gets you 20 images from any of 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901, plus BMD, trade directories, etc. I worked out exactly who I was looking for in advance and was pretty pleased with it, although transcription wasn't brilliant: McGlynn as Mc Glynn, Hibbert as Hebbert and Cleaver as Claver. Resorted to first name and age to find most of them. Well worth the money, and enough info to keep me busy for a few months, so I didn't bother to upgrade to a year.

I wanted to know whether the dob shown on ancestry is the one taken straight from the death cert or whether they do some sort of cross-referencing before uploading the information to ensure that the dob on the system is, indeed, the correct one The Ancestry BMD information is from the FreeBMD transcriptions for the earlier ones and presumably from the GRO for the later ones. The Date of Birth will that recorded by them. I don't think any check is made by them, they will just record the information supplied to them. MB

Hi is anyone awake?,Have just been reading all through your site,Please can you tell me ,what other databases there actually are on Ancestry that can be acessed without them saying "we want another subscription off you to look in here!!"Because i do not seem to have found any .Also have tried to get into their message boards but have not managed to.I dont know if I am being a bit dense where the message board is concerned. I do not really want to pay anymore than the £70 just paid to them. So if there is anyone out there awake who can help I would be grateful.Best wishes VICKY.

My Great Grandfather came to South Africa in 1881 with three children two of who where named in a book called Registry of the South African Nation. The three names where listed on his death notice. Lookups on the 1881 Census where negative even though I knew where they had stayed in England from my Grandfathers birth certificate. Recently I found the family in the 1871 Cencus available on Ancestry UK after a 5 year search. Although a name was missing another sons name was listed and I now know that my Great Grandparents were married at 15. Never give up. The information is out there somewhere.

I contacted Ancestry to say I didn't have a credit card. They suggested a money order sent by snail mail to the US(international cheques not accepted) but pointed out that if I was in the EU then I'd have to pay VAT on top of the usual subscription.... As I could only have afforded to make quarterly payments, sounded like it was going to be a lot of palaver to do and much more expensive than I had thought.... I gave up...

Twinkle Thank you. That's as I thought. So it can't be guaranteed to be the EXACT date of birth, it just gives a FULL date of birth rather than just the qtr Lou

The DOB on death certs (and in the index) is the one provided by the person registering the death. There's no cross referencing and rarely is a birth certificate consulted before the death is registered.

Is that the exact date of birth or the date of birth given for the purpose of registering the death and obtaining the certificate which may or may not be correct depending on who gave the information? As far as I can see it is the date of birth. I checked one example just now and the date of birth was correct. I found it interesting to check some names out, it gave me some new ones to investigate. Helen Do you have anyone who could use their card to pay for you (if you give them the money first)? I don't have a credit card either, but my husband let me use his to make the payment. Hope this helps. Natalie

I haven't got a credit card and I subscribe! I know they don't take Switch, I assume that's what you have?

I used Ancestry UK but since I don't have a credit card (they won't take anything except Visa/Mastercard) I can't subscribe. Any ideas around this - and I don't WANT a cc ;)

Yes I found that too. My hubby's dad was estranged from the family and I found his death on that index which meant I could send for his certs and find out his mum and dad. Ancestry is very useful. I think a lot of people dont use the full facilities on there, which is a shame.
