Gosh! 33,000???!!!! Let me see now, what's 33,000 times £7? Answer = £231,000. So, not only lucky, but rich too. Marjorie (very poor, only could afford 58 certificates so far) |

Marjorie I can't believe you can calculate something like that this late! Lou (who's other half still thinks the certs are free!) |

Yeah exactly Marjorie, you are thinking what I am thinking, how many of these 33,000 people could actually be verified! |

How do you get 33,000 ?? There I am struggling to get my 120.... although they are all definite ones, and only my maternal Grandmother's side. As they came from the next county to where I live now ( great for parish records !!) All the other branches of the tree in Durham and Scotland, so saving that for when I'm rich !!! Andrea :o) |

I have 947, but that's taken me over 20 years to compile, goes back to the late 1600s, includes inlaws and extended family in most generations - and is 75% from my mother's side. 33,000!!!! the mind boggles. Carole |

It depends a lot on whether you are just doing your direct ancestors, or whether you include all the descendants from each pair of ancestors (i.e. all your cousins too). If the latter, then it really doesn't take long before you're up in the 1000's. Obviously you can't get certificates for all of them, but I don't see that as being a reason not to add them to your tree when you have other supporting evidence such as census data. If people only added names to their tree once they had the certs, no-one would have any dates pre-1837! In any case, just because you have a certificate doesn't always mean that it is the right one... |

I dont think Id want 33,000 - I mean you could start adding anyone at random, couldnt you. I have less than 400 and all verified. |

Lou, thanks for the praise(!) but in fact I got it wrong, because you need at least two certs for each person, plus half a cert if they married, so the figure should have been £576,000. (I think). Long may your hub think certs are free, I told my ex that my shoes cost £5.(long time ago). I have still got most of them, so they were worth the (real) price! Tee hee. Richard I was being slightly facetious because I too have names on my unofficial tree well before 1837. However, I have verified them all and that didnt come free - I looked at Parish Regs etc and got photocopies, only 10p a photocopy, but still not free - some early documents cost £20 a copy. And it has taken me well over five years to verify about 400 people - how can you verify 33,000? Time alone won't allow it never mind the money! I have another 1000 or so, not verified and not much chance of ever doing so, they seem to be figments of someone's imagination and they remain in pencil! You can of course hook onto someone else's research - I have never been that lucky, except for once and I still felt bound to check everything.(Mostly right, but one or two important mistakes....) Personally, I can't bear the thought that someone will come along after I've gone, pick up my research and find mistakes, making me look a careless fool. But each to his own, of course. Happy hunting Marjorie. |

To be honest. I don't think genealogy is about how many people you have in your tree. It is about building up a history of your ancestors, not just having a load of statistical information which is uninteresting and useless. I would much rather have a managable amount of ancestors in my tree, where I have detailed information on them and have built up a history, rather than have thousands of names that are meaningless. |
