Just wondered if anyone has used this pay for view site? |

Hi Chris A few times. It depends on what you are looking for as the coverage isn't UK-wide at the moment but I've found it really useful for finding burials that don't appear on the NBI Lou |

Thanks for that Lou - it seems very cheap - do you have to buy a minimum amount to view? |

Hi Chris I think it's a fiver of credits but some of the stuff is actually free to view and other stuff 5p, 10p 20p, so you get a lot for your dosh really and I don't think they expire so you can keep going back to the site! Have just been and checked...any credits you buy last 183 days! Lou |

No guarantees on quality, but the information is indexed by family historians. You pay more for "checked" information because the likelihood of error is less. 1881 census is free, using same data as LDS site, but organised differently. Given the choice of Ancestry and FHOL indexes for 1871 or 1891, you're more likely to find someone in FHOL. B |

I've found it very useful as it seems to bring up relatives I've not found elsewhere! Also not only is it cheap, but as the credits last a long time, you're not under pressure to use them all in 48 hours or something silly like that. I didn't know about it till I saw it recommended on here. Well worth supporting. Sandra |

Yes, it's very useful if the parish that you want is on there. You can check the database coverage before you pay. I bought £5 worth of credits, and they've already paid for themselves - I had found a death on FreeBMD (1838, before ages were shown in the index) that I thought might have been GGGG'dad and was about to send for the cert, but then I found the burial on FHO. It cost me just 5p to check and it turned out to be an infant death, obviously not what I wanted. So I'm already £2 up! Also, found another ancestor who was in and out of Devizes prison throughout his life! |

The only complaint i would i is that if i need to look up a common name on a census then it brings up loads of hits for that name and you have to pay to view them all which can work out expensive. Does anyone know a way round this? Paula |

I think there is an element of luck because the records vary from place to place. I spent an evening searching first to 'test the water' then decided to punt a fiver. It was well worth it and I found some 1841 census info which whilst not complete gave me some new leads, but best of all found burial records for an entire branch of my mums family in the church yard for the village where they lived which included children who died young whom we never even knew about.
