Hi Kim, Yes, you might be right there. I guess that's the problem I'm facing - no record. Thanks for pointing it out. I suppose the best sources of information in these situations is living relatives. Regards, Andy

I did not compare you to the village idiot. I said that not even the village idiot would be so forgetful.... suggesting that you are not a village idiot. Understand, now? 700 people in your tree and you need help? Like I said, if you're not willing to do the work yourself, or have not even looked yourself (the 1901 is available free to search online), then you shouldn't bother other people. That's not fair on them.

Andrew, quite simply this ( and to use method of yours) Added by Andrew Gray on 17/02/2005 21:21:38 I'm not sure I understand your responses Jess - are you suggesting that posting for help is the wrong approach here? This is a message board for seeking out information not found elsewhere. I have access to censuses, I have an ancestry subscription, I have ordered certificates with the limited information I have. I was merely posting a message for help in the hope someone with some vital information was looking. Posting is the correct thing to do. acting on and responding to what you are given is also correct. being arrogant is not. ....and just one point - adoption didn't exist until 1927

Kim

Kim Report 17 Feb 2005 22:25

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that formal adoption didn't become official with documents unitl the 1920s. So if he was adopted, it wouldn't show up then? I've a few like that in my tree , but I don't know how you prove it especially as it would be too late for the census as well. Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for. kim

Chloe, For someone who wrote a reply to me saying 'You are rude and inconsiderate' and then to compare me to the village idiot....well...need I type more. Regards, Andy

Simon Andrew had over 700 in his tree and started in 2003. So he cannot use that as a excuse. He knows what he is doing. He is just very rude and arrogant.

Andrew Report 17 Feb 2005 22:19

Simon, Thank you for a level headed reply. Regards, Andy

On the same day, within hours of postings? Not even the village idiot could be so forgetful! Perhaps I'm an exception, but when I started my tree (in 1998) I knew what was on paper, I had it all in my head, it still is to a degree, and this was before I wrote it down on any type of message board and asked for help, back in the day when those who couldn't be arsed to do the work, didn't get any done because there were no people like us who wanted to help so openly.

I think that everyone should take a deep breath and count to ten i know when i started my family tree i asked the same question a few times mearly because i was'nt orginised enough and i got in a right state. Paper everywhere you know how it is.

Chloe, please read my first response when I became aware that my posting had been misconstrued. 'I sincerely meant no disrespect and did not notice the 'Source 1901 census -RG13/4344 Folio 14 page 20' at the foot of your posting. Thank you for the posting.' How is that rude compared to the responses I received?

McDitzy

McDitzy Report 17 Feb 2005 22:05

I have recently had someone ask for a look up on one of my threads and then post their own message. I never got a thank you or anything. This doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it's so disheartening. I have people in my tree with common names, Frederick William Newman, for example. I spent £70 until I found the right one, and that was because I didn't know the area. Admittedly this was before the internet got so popular and so resourceful genealogy wise. Genealogy isn't about 'doing it cheaply', it's about finding the correct info, despite how many certificates you have to buy to do so. If you're not willing to do this then this is obviously not the right 'hobby' for you. You are rude and inconsiderate, Andrew. People help on here out of kindness, they are not paid to do it. Don't treat them like you're paying them to do it, treat them with some respect for God's sake!

Andrew I can see why Jess is upset, you could of replied with has anyone else have any other ideas. Her response is natural, im sure she felt like she has wasted her time & effort. Julie

Julie I completely agree but read the responses to my thread.

Julie Report 17 Feb 2005 21:33

Andrew Wots with the attitude, EVERYONE i have come across on Genes has always been very nice and taken the time out to help others where possible. 99.9% those who ask for help reply saying thankyou regardless of what information is found. I for one couldn't research my rellies without there help. Julie

Debbie Report 17 Feb 2005 21:25

Andrew Earlier on at 19.05pm you asked for help with a Henry Gray. Jess answered that pretty quick at 19.15pm. At 19.22pm you asked the same question again on a different thread. Now that is just wasting peoples time, as some other poor person is franticaly looking for you, and they havnt seen the other thread. If you ask for a look up ask once. If you dont get a answer perhaps ask again.

Jess, sorry to correct you slightly, if you have spare credits with the GRO , or a spare bit of plastic then perhaps you should offer to order the cert for them, just in case it might be the wrong one and they might have wasted their money....!
