hi jeanette just tried my disc as i have had my disc drive repair ,so now i can get started. what do i write them on and how . i know it sounds thick but need it in laymans terms please thank you so much i have downloaded geni and the other things, carol.jones

Hi Nikki sorry I wasn't around earlier. I was soaking up the sun while it lasts! lol I would put something like clerk at railway co, then an x in column S and a note in column Y. That way you have alerted the checker and they can decide what to do with it! lol Jeanette x

hi i have just started transcribing last week, i have nearly done my sample of 10 pages but i am a bit stuck on a occupation. i can read most of the writing, so it must be me. are there any sites that give a list of jobs that i could have a look at to see if anything looks like it. all my ancestors seemed to be ag labs so i have not got much of a clue when it comes to jobs. thankyou shirley

Hi Judith FreeCen tells us to type the incorrect placename, put an x in column V, and a note of the correct placename in column Y Jeanette x

thanks to all those who advised on the split screen, gt it sorted and able to work a lot faster! less typing in the notes as i am getting used to the writing! lol Will download the genie now as I am familiar with durham villages but need to learn more as I have hit a street where everyone seems to be from Lincolnshire and lancashire! One small thing please, when the villiage is wrote wrong ie pensher when i know it is penshaw do i stick with the 'type what is written' rule or amend it? ooooh dear just when i thought i was getting there!! Hi Judith Sorry I didn't see your queries last night. I thought Maureen had answered them. I see she has helped with the split screen thing though. Thanks Maureen. Genie is quite a useful program to have as Maureen has said. You can download it from the FreeCen sight, on the same page you downloaded SSCENS from. I think it's at the top of that page. As for your query about the head of household being stated as away. I would put hyphens in columns I and J and an x in column K, then a note in column Y. The x will alert the checker to the query and then they can make the decision of what to do! lol. Yes, I am one of those peeps who likes to put notes in column Y although I don't go OTT! lol. I'm sure that will all change though when I have checked my first piece and had to delete everybody elses notes! lol Jeanette x

Hi peeps! Sorry I wasn't around tonight, but it's my one night out of the week! lol Angie - this is from FreeCen Column T Overseas entries are coded OVB where the person is stated to be a British Subject, or was born in one of the British Empire countries of the time; OVF is used for all other Foreign birth-places. Use UNK only as a last resort! If my (poor!) history serves me right, France was not a member of the British Empire at the time, and as it is not stated that the person is a British Subject, I would put OVF in column T and France in column U. Hi again Judith, Spent about 15 mins working with split screen top/bottom. Not that much different to working with split left/right but did find I needed to move the image across more times and kept having to go back to the spreadsheet more - which started to get on my nerves a little bit even after just 15 mins. Probably because I have got used to working with split left/right. Only suggestion I can come up with is the size of the image when you are viewing. I do the zoom in/out first so that the writing is a size that is comfortable to read. Then I adjust the size of Irfanview to fit into the split screen. Just wondering if you have not altered the size of the image or spreadsheet if you are going back and forward between them as you should be able to read the image and type on the spreadsheet with the image still in view. When I work down the image by column I can type a whole column with only adjusting the image or spreadsheet once. Surname and christian name can be done in one go and when I get to relationship, condition, sex and age this can be done in one go. Maureen

Hi Judith, I work with Irfanview on left hand side of screen and spreadsheet on right - so both showing at once but not overlapping almost touching down the middle - but they do fill up the screen. Have you reduced the size of Irfanview? Problem with this is that when you zoom in or out the size of the image increases and you then have to make it smaller again to use the spreadsheet. I work down the columns rather than across. Depending on the size of image I can do a whole column without having to 'leave' the spreadsheet. Then I adjust the image so that I can read the next column and go back to the spreadsheet. Should work okay if you are working top and bottom. Will have to try this way and see what I think. Freeze panes and 'best fit' etc should 'SAVE' automatically when you save the spreadsheet. Genie - is a list of UK towns that were on the 1891 census for East and West Riding - places of birth etc - does not include every town or village in the UK. Can be useful. hi all sorry to repeat any of the following questions - 1) Split screen where am i going wrong! I was using microsft explorer to view images and jumping screens like jeanette. I downloaded infranview, reduced my excel screen but still having to jump screen to screen when i type then to read image. removed toolbars etc. any instructions will be appreciated. 2) best fit - when i go back into excel i have to sort my columns out and freeze panes everytime can you guys tell me how it will save without having to redo this everytime i open my file? 3)genie - what is it? and do we need to download it? if so how? 4) on one of my households the image has wrote head away from home (no name or anything) then listed his children do i put something in the notes? I (like maureen) may have been a bit enthusiastic with notes!! I was using x then typing such as ?occ in notes. Carol said just to use hypeh and x with out adding anything in the notes! Hope not to have confused you all! I have done about 19 pages but like everyone trying to ensure it is done properly. also if I could read the image from the top whilst typing in the bottom would save time. Judith
