have come to the union workhouse halfway down census page and the enumerator has left 2 blank rows before starting although the schedule number is next consecutive so do i just carry on without leaving blank rows. Also any advice on how to put schoolmaster, schoolmistress, pauper inmate in column L please. thanks Chris

I've been told by my co-ordinator not to bother with the ? in column Y unless it's a bit of a tricky one that may not be immediately obvious. Of course they all have their different ways of doing things but, you could always ask your co-ord if you can do the same.........nothing ventured, nothing gained! lol Yes, please feel free to use this thread anytime.........even if it's just to say hello! thanks for that. do i need to enter a ?in the notes column every time or will the check program stop automatically. is it ok to use this thread again if i have any more problems? chris x

Well I've never come across that one before! lol It looks to me like it should be the same as unoccupied, BUT that isn't what it says! So to be on the safe side I would type in the schedule number and then put an x in column H. That way the checking program will automatically stop at those entries, and then the checker can decide what should be done. Jeanette x

Hi Chris I'll attempt to answer your questions in the order you asked them! 1. If the enumerator has written 3u........yes, use up 3 lines using 0 and u 2. Oooooo I'm not sure about this one! lol. If i give you my email addy, is it possible for you to send me a page with this on? If it's too complicated we'll try and resolve it on this thread. 3. It looks like you've got some you shouldn't have. But as you can never be sure, I would include them.....ie. carry on as is.........but I would make a note by putting an x in column H and a note in column Y for the first and last entries of the other district. Many thanks for your help so far. I think i have made a good start now but i have come across a couple of things that I can't find covered in this thread. 1. if the enumerator puts '3u' in column 4 do i have to use up 3 lines with a 0 schedule number and 'u' in column H 2. how do i show entry if enumerator puts 'no lodger' in the address column - he seems to do this a lot but the entry does have a schedule number 3. I have 2 pages of gainsborough district (folio 4) then 3 pages of another district (folio 97) then it goes back to gains district (folio 5) so i do i just enter all as is even though the folios and schedules are in the wrong order. thanking you in advance and by the way I have found this thread to be much more useful than the help tips on the freecen site Chris

HI Chris Just looking in on my way to bed! I take it you mean how do you enter it as it has no schedule number? In column E, where you would normally enter the schedule number, just put a 0 (zero) and then a u in column H. If you haven't done so already, I would recommend printing out the sheets called Field Descriptions. You will probably find that they have downloaded onto your desktop, but it's very handy to have them in print to refer to as you go along Jeanette x

have just started doing my first disc and all seems to be going ok, but i have just got to my fist problem. I know that everything has to be put in schedule order but how do i enter an unoccupied dwelling in between 2 schedules. i am doing the 1841 gainsborough and there are no house numbers, they all seem to be shops at the moment. Sorry if this has been answered on another thread, i seem to have been reading all day. Chris

Sorry Jeanette, meant to have said would be back later. At the top of my spreadsheet I have A, B, C etc and down the left is numbered 1, 2, 3etc. I will try what you have sugested later, going out for lunch with hubby so will catch up early evening, thanks again. Nicky

Couldn't find it where I expected to, but this is what my computer tells me to do............XP, Excel 2003 Click on Column A, Row 3. Click on Window at the top of the page and then click on Freeze Panes. You will now find that everything in Rows 1 and 2 will scroll down as you go further down the page. If you want to unfreeze it, click on Window again and then on Unfreeze Pane. Jeanette x UPDATE........Just re-read your query. Do you have the following at the top of you spreadsheet? Row 1, column A - RG+number Row 2 - description of column ie. Civil Parish, ED, Folio etc Row 3 - abcdefghijkl etc

Morning Nicky! That's a good tip about the images. I've just been typing the image number on my spreadsheet before I close it. There is an answer to your query about setting the columns somewhere! I'll just finish my toast and jam and go and have a look for you! lol Jeanette x

Hi again. Just a very quick query this time. Is there anyway of changing the top of the spreadsheet where it says A, B, C, D etc to the title of that column, ie name, address occ, I have gone down an awful long way on the spreadsheet and have to keep scrolling up now and again to see what column I should be using. Also a quick tip for anyone new like me, I was a bit worried about the amount of images I am transcribing and was worried I would get them mixed up, so i created a new folder inside my freecen folder and named it 'images finished'. Then when one image has been finished i have moved it to this folder. I now know that when I open my freecen folder the first image i see is the one i need to do. This way the you also get to see how many you have left to do!!! Have done 6 pages this week so quite proud and have sent it to my co-ordinator to check and only a few errors, so well pleased. Nicky

Hiya Nicky Yes that's right.........just keep retyping it and no ditto's or do's. In the case of where it just says Scotland for a birthplace, just put sct in column T and leave column U blank. The reason for this being that we can't be expected to guess whereabouts in Scotland they were born and they haven't given any indication. It seems to depend on which Windows system you are using in order to get the hyphen to work. I'm on XP now and I can just type it in. But when I was using ME I had to type in speech marks followed by the hyphen. (would you believe GR won't let you type the speech mark sign! But it's the one above the number 2 on my keyboard) If there's a place of birth and no county. Hyphen in column T, birthplace in Column U, x in column V. Then have a look on the Genie program to see if you work out what it should be. Put the suggestion in column Y Hope that helps Jeanette x
