Sarah I had a play around and I could do it with both on mine. Have you tried just using the blank censdemo sheet? It will just mean that if you are daft enough (lol) to do another piece, you will have to download it again. Failing that, try contacting your co-ordinator. Sorry I can't be of anymore help Jeanette x

Thanks for your offer Jeanette. I'll get hubby involved in helping me as he's more of a techie than me but if I get nowhere I'll message you for help if that's OK. I really want to do this so was gutted when I couldn't fathom it but I will not be beaten LOL. Thanks again for your help. There really is a fantastic bunch of people on this site. Sarah x

Jeanette, I had to look at a couple of images on Ancestry today as mine were grey and the writing a bit faint but most of it readable - just on one enumerator - and the images were clear and readable on Ancestry. After I had typed what I thought from the images I checked what had been transcribed on Ancestry. Boy what a shock !!! Could not believe what I was reading. Birth place of Bewholme shown as Bladterlme, N.Frodingham shown as N. Brodzchas. Was I really looking at the same images? Did they really get paid for that rubbish? Wonder if Ancestry need any paid transcribers if that is the standard - might have to volunteer if they want anyone for 1851 census. LOL Maureen

Lol Maureen! Sorry I haven't replied sooner but the cat has been up to its old tricks again! lol. Just been out to get a new extension lead. There was a thread on the other day about the terrible transcriptions on Ancestry. As I said then, I think the people who did the transcribing were foreign and were paid by the amount they turned out. I was thinking they might have been Indian transcribers but looking at the mistranscriptions you found it looks like they could have been from the Eastern Bloc countries! lol Jeanette x

Marion, Sorry can not help you on this question as I save my spreadsheet as an ordinary Excel one and my co-ordinator changes it when I send to her. Jeanette, Just sent another area to Carol. Another small one with only 1600 lines and hardly any addresses to type. Two down and six to go. Maureen

Hi Marion If you click on File and then Save As a window will pop up. Where it says Save as Type I choose Excel 97-200. Hope that helps as I'm a computer divvy myself! lol. But as Maureen says, if it's saved in Excel format, you co-ordinator should be able to convert it. Jeanette x

Hi Marion, Carol is lovely to talk to - so bubbly. Hi Jeanette, Had some feedback from Carol on second area that I sent her. Apparently I was a little bit over enthusiastic with my comments in column 'Y'. Maureen

Hi Jeanette, A small problem with schedule numbers. Get up to 44 okay, then it says 89 and then continues with 45. On the second last page for this ED I have a sch 89 and on the last page a sch 90. Both of the sch 89's have names against them. I presume I put '0' instead of the 89 - 'x' in column H - then a note in column Y. Maureen

Hi Jeanette Can you help? Have an enumerator having a senior moment! They have put in the relationship column 'Mar' 'Mar' instead of 'Head' 'Wife' for a couple living in the same household. Do I put down as he originally recorded and put an 'X' in column P? Anna

Hi Anna Sorry I wasn't around last night. I was out painting the town red! lol We are told to type exactly as it is written so yes I would do that - and a note in column Y Jeanette x

Hi Jeanette and fellow transcribers. Had a break for a week - catching up with some of my own research - hence no questions. Is there a correct way of showing junior? Head: John Smith Son: John Smith jnr Do I show after the christian name or surname and do I show as jnr or junior or not bother at all? Jeanette have a great day on your birthday on the 25th. Maureen

Thanks Maureen - Although I'm doing my celebrating on Sunday so I've got bank holiday Monday to recover! lol From SSCENS Field Descriptions - Titles are to be typed after forenames, enclosed in brackets as in (Rev), (Dr), (Prof) etc. So although junior isn't strictly a title I would treat it the same. Put Smith in the surname column as usual, john and jnr in the forename column - ie. john (jnr) - an x in column K and a note in column Y Jeanette x
