Jeanette. Just to update. Had a call from Carol and she has sent me details of some software to download from www(.)irfranview(.)com (hope I have typed that right) which should help with viewing the images. Will try that in the morning. There a couple of other software programmes that I have on my system which we discussed that might also work. Will obviously let you know if I have any luck as might be of use to someone else. There can be differences on the disks because they come from two different sources - that is why I have no index on mine. Maureen

Connie, I've printed off your instructions my disc has'nt arrived yet but knowing me and computers I shall definately need them!! I've already had my confidence on doing this,take a knock.Received a birth cert: yesterday and can't read the mothers name. Thankfully it was not the right parents, but what hope have I with the census enumerators writing!!!! Oh well can only have a go. Anyway, Thank you. Geraldine

hi everyone, it looks like this is turning into a place for freecen transcribers to hangout so I thought I'd jump right in. I'm Lynda and I'm in Melbourne, Australia. I'm doing the 1861 for Somerset and am about half way through my 4th piece. It was quite confusing at first and I really bombarded my coordinator (hi Terry!) with questions but he was great and sorted out all my goofs. Is anyone else here transcribing Somerset? What pieces are yours? I've finished RG9/1628 RG9/1629 RG9/1631 and now working on RG9/1632. Lynda

Morning Lynda, Nice to hear from you. I've just started my 3rd piece for West Yorkshire 1861. As you are such and 'old hand' (lol) at this, please feel free to offer advice or reply to queries posted by our new transcribers. Or if you have any tips to pass on, please share them with us. Jeanette x

Jeanette and guys. Update as promised for anyone who gets a similar disk to mine - no index down left hand side and the disk opens in Internet Explorer. I could only view about 4 or 5 lines and a couple of columns at once. Went to www(.)irfanview(.)com and downloaded a programme. Had no idea which to choose so opted for the first one - row of cows next to it - then selected Windows 98 - during the download process there comes up a box towards the end with a lot of options that are available mainly for dealing with photos etc but I did not select any of them - only took a couple of minutes to download even with my old system. I might regret not choosing some of the options but time will tell. I can now open an image and see the whole page and have finally got a zoom in and out option. YIPEE !!!!!!! Might be able to get on now with some transcribing. Good luck everybody, Maureen

Ann. There is no way I am going to finish before you. Stupidly said I would do the whole disk with 8 towns/villages on it. Me and my big mouth. Taken me long enough to get to the stage of starting on it. Jeanette. The images are now a lot clearer - not quite so grey looking. Happy transcribing everyone. Maureen

I am a newbie(having only got my first cd to transcribe this morning LOL)! I wanted to ask what is probably a daft question - in the 'surnames' part there ar often 'Da' after the first names - does this mean 'ditto' and assumes to be the same as the head of household? (in which case do I use the heads surname?) or does it mean something else? (in which case I use Da?) Any help is truly greatfully received! Cheers Vikki

Victoria it will be do for ditto. You have to write the name,but don't write do or ditto. Have mailed you Ann xx

Hi everyone Do you know if there is a list that will help me transcribe some of the jobs that they did in 1861 Suffolk/Norfolk. l keep getting the occupation wood? and its not woodman or wood cutter. lt looks like woodrave or woodreve, but there again l've been looking at it for so long it could say something totally different. Also l have just come to the end of a Parish and on the next page it says List of persons not in houses....... What do l do with these people? Thanks for any advise, Kim

Hi Kim It looks like it could be wood reeve - or mispelt wood reve. Have a look at this page http://mhh*co*uk/occup/ Remove * and replace with . The people missing from households - are they written on the same sort of sheet as the rest or on the abstract of totals sheet? Jeanette x

Hi Jeanette Thanks for the occupation site. l will have a look in a min. The sheet is the same as the ones l have been transcribing from. The man used a new sheet and wrote across the page A List of persons not in houses. Then he has put Sch 52 Honington in the road/street column, Name col. James Calver, Unmar 27, Ag Lab, Suffolk Honington. The other fella has been put down as Sch 33 Sapiston, Henry Mothersole, Unmar 50, Cattle Drover, Suffolk Sapiston. Hi Kim I didn't miss anything from the addy but you're right, it doesn't work. I found it by putting old occupations in Google search and it was the second result down. I've seen them put the odd little note at the bottom when they've got schedule numbers mixed up, but not when they have put in names of missing persons! Looks like a question for your co-ordinator. Will you let us know what they say please Jeanette x
