Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 19 Mar 2005 17:49

Coiuld you check on 1891 & 1871 for my grt grandad JOHN BATCHELOR. I found him on tyhe 1881 on family search site living at 1 Bohn Street London .Middlesex aged 33, with his Wife Esther aged 29 son John 10.dau Esther 9 ,dau Agnes 6,son Arthur4(My grandad!!!) & two sons James 2 & 12 months???. he is listed as gas Fitter at factory *born Holloway When Arthur married his first wife Elizabeth in 1896 John wasnt listed as deceased on the marriage cert, but when he married my Nan Jessie(they wre both widowed) in Aug 1909 he is listed as deceased I couldnt find either JOHN OR Esther on the 1901census.& the only death cert I,ve found wasnt him when i purcahsed it for a death in Poplar 1900 aged 52 but he wife informant wasnt Esther. John married Esther Mar 19th 1870 (have the cert) & his addres then was 8 Suffolk Street.they married in parish ch.of old Jude Bethnal Green. So they should be on the 1871 census as a couple John was 22 & Esther 18 * he was a brassfinisher. On Arthurs marriage cert he is still listed as Brass Finisher. He would have been born circa 1847/48 but no luck yet in finding his birth cert either. John,s father was Charles Batchelor but no idea who is mother was * efforts to find Charles too not successful so far.hope this not too rambling

Please can you help me trace the Lynch family as I can only find them in the 1881 census , before and after that they seem to have disappeared. Thomas Lynch b 1831, Anne his wife b 1836, Ellen dau.b 1858, Tommy son b 1865 , Anne dau b 1866 and Elizabeth b 1868. Thomas was born in Meath Ireland and Anne born in Queenstown Ireland. The children were born in Southampton. Thomas snr was a Seaman and on the 1881 census Tommy a Steam Hammer Man. At the time of the 1881 census they were living at 51 Alice St, West Ham, Essex. We know there were other children as my dad remembers his grandmother Elizabeth saying she had numerous siblings - good Catholics - but cannot remember names etc. Would appreciate anything you can find out. Many thanks Heather

Jess, Further to your offer. The only Poyner's in Cheltenham will be mine. They are the only ones on the BMD'S as well. These probably will be siblings to Robert and Emma. I would very much like any details that are known, If it's a big job, don't worry. Thank you once again. Dave

Jess, Wow, you've found them. Thank you so much. They are the right family. Looks like Wallace's wife and daughter were elsewhere on census night. They are all together in 1881. You are a star... Thank you. David

Hi Jess, You have inadvertantly helped find details of Julia Poyner who would have been a cousin to Wallace Poyner, and to be honest not in the place I was expecting her to be as her mother Elizabeth was buried in Taynton, Gloucestershire 22 sept 1871 aged 84 !!! I take it there are no Poyner families listed for Cheltenham at Fairview Street, or a Robert/Emma (Robert Master Cabinet Maker) Wallace/Elizabeth (Wallace a master French Polisher)in central Birmingham in 1871. I have been looking for 15 years looks like they avoided census night that year !!! Thanks for having a go.. more inportantly I now have a married name for Julia. David

Thanks again, Jess. Interesting results! The age of the 'younger' Rice listed doesn't tie in with my great great grandfather's age (he would have been about 44 in 1871, but his son Edward is precisely the right age to be my great grandfather). The age of Rice's wife is interesting too, at 31 she's too young to be Edward's mother. Looks as if Rice married twice. Kate

Jess, Hope you can help me. Normally I don't ask for look-ups because half the fun is finding things for yourself, however I would be very grateful if you could find memebers of my POYNER family who I know moved from Cheltenham to Birmingham between 1865 and 1875. All will have been born in Cheltenham or Taynton Gloucestershire. Looking for Wallace William POYNER or William Wallace POYNER bn 1834 wife Elizabeth, daughter Harriet on 1871 census probably in central Birmingham. Also Wallace's father Robert bn 1808, Mother Emma bn1811 (Ross on wye) and all his siblings. Shows up in 1881 as Wallace Payners. variant spellings are Poiner, Pinner, Pyner. Thank you so much for your time, David

Hi Jess Thanks for the help you've previously given me with my Williams ancestors, it's much appreciated. Any chance that you could check the 1871 census again for me? I'm looking for Rice EDWARDS (and yes the spelling is correct, it's the old spelling of Rhys/Rees/Reece), living in Bala (Merioneth) - though on the 1881 census Bala village is called Llanycil. I'm fairly certain that he's my great great grandfather and my great grandfather, Edward EDWARDS, may be shown living with him. If you can track them down, could you let me have the details, please. Fingers crossed! Kate

Dear Jess, Thanks for the info on Benjamin Sindall. Do not think it is the correct one. He would have been about 34 years old in 1871, maybe a police constable, born in ingoldsby Lincolnshire, i would really appreciate it if you could have another look for me. This gentleman has been bugging me for a long time, i want to know who his father is. Thanks a lot Vanessa
