have you tried just putting their first name age and where born. When 1901 first came out I couldn't wait for it to come on line so I went to the PRO and got a copy of the census pages I needed. Just for fun when it did come on line I couldn't find my g grandparents, I knew where they were etc, but they still did not come up. It turned out they were put under ..... as they could not read the surname, they also used their 2nd names which throw me when I look again there they were. The PRO when I informed them put the surname in but couldn't correct the first names as that was what was on the census sheet. So if you know their 1st and 2nd names try both. Irene |

Sometimes you have to be very inventive, the flowery writing used on censuses and certs is often very hard to decipher and its extremely difficult when the first initial is in doubt. I have Lenorthey for Smoothy, Thorne for Moore and Curvey for Purvey, to name but 3 examples. I found some by doing a search of first names (luckily they had used 2 and put an initial for the third) date and place of birth 0n the 1901. The Thorne one I only found because she was staying with her Matthews (transcribed as Marthers) relatives and Emma in Yorkshire tracked them down. I had no idea that Miss Moore was staying with her big sister in london and would never have found her by searching her name. I thought she was still in Cambridge! Ditto Louisa Curvey - she was staying with her married sister and I knew married sister was previously Purvey. nell |

Always stressed! | Report | 8 Apr 2005 09:13 |
Hello, I have had same problem. They are on 1871, 1891 and 1901 but no sign on the 1881 which is very frustrating. There should be a wife, husband and children. Have tried different spellings of surname, searching for all children, girls as boys and boys as girls but nothing. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Very frustrating isnt it. Good luck with search. Best wishes Pam. |

Do you know if any of them signed as witnesses at the various marriages? That would give you a time frame to search for possible deaths. I was searching for someone on the 1901 index without success but when I viewed the actual image, Hannah was there all the time, with the family(who were on the index) I even tried searching the index again after I had her information but she still didn't show on it. |

They will 99% be there somewhere, maybe wrongly spelled or not where you expect them. post some names, ages and birthplaces and the will probably be hunted out! Post the latest census returns too if you have it ~Jess~ |
