Geoff

Geoff Report 19 Apr 2005 21:11

Click back to the previous page and you'll see it was Ponting's - a large department store on Kensington High St.

On page one across the address columns is written in large letters ''DERRY & TOMS' Google ''DERRY & TOMS'' including the quotes...lots of references ''Charles Derry and Charles Toms all opened shops in the 1860s that would come to dominate as art deco department stores between the wars. The Ponting Brothers brought their Westbourne Grove business to do battle with Barkers and Derry & Toms in the 1890s and the High Street remains an international outpost for clothes shopping. Church Street, in its turn, has become a global leader in antiques. ''

what sort of place would this be as they are all females

Geoff

Geoff Report 19 Apr 2005 21:02

It says 'co. not stated' (county) Here's my final interpretation: On the original form it said Stourton Warwick - which was transcribed as Stourton Manvill Someone came along and said 'Hmm, it doesn't give a county' and wrote 'Co. not stated' after the place name (in a different handwriting).

Robert

Robert Report 19 Apr 2005 21:01

sorry county not stated

Robert

Robert Report 19 Apr 2005 20:57
