Do you know her maiden name? Or the name of the child they had together? |

Are you saying that John Robinson is the illegitimate son of Stephen Holmes and Jane Elizabeth? That would explain where the Robinson name came from; it's Jane's maiden name. |

JOHN ROBINSON 30/11/1921 WAS REGISTERED BY JANE ELIZABETH ROBINSON AT SUB DISTRICT WEST CORNFORTH ON 10/01/1922, NO FATHER NAMED. YET THE CONFUSING PART IS ON JOHNS MARRIAGE CERT TO PATRICA BROWN 27/10/1945 HE NAMED HIS FATHER AS JOHN ROBINSON? YET HIS FATHER WAS STEPHEN HOLMES? I AM AT A DEAD END FINDING INFORMATION ABOUT JANE ELIZABETH ROBINSON AS I CANNOT FIND ANY RECORDS AND DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START LOOKING. A KIND MAN GAVE ME LOADS OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE HOLMES FAMILY AND I HAVE SINCE MET MY GRANDA JOHNS HALF BROTHER, STEPHEN HOLMES JUNIOR |

I had the same thing happen with one of my relatives - another John Robinson. Got his marriage cert and he'd given his fathers name as John Robinson. When I eventually traced his birth cert it turned out that his mothers name was Jane Robinson and there was no father registered. I still don't know who the John Robinson on his marriage cert was and doubt I ever will - I'm beginning to think he made it up just to save face! Clare |

How do you know the name was Stephen holmes if it wasn't on the bIrth cert? It suggest to me that his mother married after she had him(some years maybe ) and she became Mrs Holmes, although her son was John Robinson. What was Mr Holmes wifes name? jess |

IF JOHN ROBINSON LIVED AT 8 KEATS ROAD IN CHILTON IN 1945 WHEN HE MARRIED PATRICA BROWN IT MIGHT GIVE ME DETAILS OF WHO HE LIVED WITH BEFORE HE MOVED TO A MARITAL HOME? AND MAYBE A CLUE OF WHO BROUGHT HIM UP? HE DIDNT LIVE WITH PATRICA BROWN AS SHE LIVED AT 11 COLERIDGE ROAD CHILTON, WHERE WOULD I GET INFORMATION OF WHO LIVED AS THESE PROPERTIES? |

I think you are twizzlin yourself around in circles- based on hear say and not fact. doesn't seem as thought he knew his fathers name when he married, so invented a John. In answer to your original question, Holme only comes into the equasion by 'hearsay' the facts that you need to look at are Robinson. jess |

Electoral roles from the period would show occupants. They're not online so I think you'd have to visit the town concerned to get them from that far back. Jane was legally not allowed to name the father of John unless the father gave his permission because they weren't married. Stephen paid maintenance so it suggests he did acknowledge paternity. John may have invented a father called John Robinson for his marriage certificate. To give his dad's surname as Holmes would have instantly told everyone he was illegitimate. It's possible that Jane later married a man called John Robinson. In that case, this John Robinson would have been the stepfather and could have raised Jane's son as his own. However, it is extremely rare that a woman's maiden name is the same as her married one! |
