Lyla, just thought Id add this one, as only just received the info. If you had a Postal Worker who retired after 1859 then he should have a pension record at the Postal Workers archives. www.postalheritage.org.uk

A good site for info on life in Victorian London.....Has lots of links too. http://www(.)victorianlondon(.)org/ I spend hours in the site! Chris

I have just across this website which was on the London Met. Archives website. It has a gallery of photos which are held by various London libraries, museums and archives. Both modern and historic. Worth a look if you have ancestors from London. http://www.photolondon.org.uk/

There is a place near St Pauls called Postman's Park which has a wall of tile memorials to people who lost their lives trying to save others. It's quite moving to see but I thought I'd add this site here in case any of your ancestors might have been an unsung hero(ine). http://www.thejoyofshards(.)co(.)uk/london/tiles/ppark/index.shtml A few examples William Drake, lost his life in averting a serious accident to a lady in Hyde Park April 2 1869 whose horses were unmanageable through the breaking of the carriage pole. Thomas Simpson died of exhaustion after saving many lives from the breaking ice at Highgate Ponds. Jan 25 1885. Thomas Griffin, fitters labourer April 12 1899. In a boiler explosion at a Battersea sugar refinery was fatally scalded in returning to search for his mate. David Selves aged 12 off Woolwich supported his drowning playfellow and sank with him clasped in his arms. September 12 1886. I found my 'Paddington' ancestors with a child born in Westminster. Found the child in the parish record but the address did not lead to a match in the 61 census. A nice lady at the City of Westminster Archives suggested the Poor Rate Books and hey presto I found the address and was able to address search the census and found the family! They give basic info of head of house and addrss by year but I suspect my family were 'settled' out of Paddington into Westminster so there should hopefully be further records when I get back there. Londoners were just as good as we are at saving as much time as possible as today and just went to the nearest church for baptisms. I searched (over 3 years) every church record in Paddington and Kensington for a baptism in 1835 to find that they had just nipped over the Edgeware Road into Marylebone! Its a good idea to make a map of the area and plot the churches sylvie

Hi all - Does anyone know how I can find out which areas of South London may be missing from the 1871 and 1891 censuses. Various family names e.g. Duggan, Prendiville, Skurls etc. who would all have lived within a fairly tight area of Bermondsey, Rotherhithe, Southwark, St. Olave.do not seem to be on the 1871 and 1891 censuses but they appear on the 1861/81 and 1901. They can't all have bee'd off back to Ireland for their Holidays. I think I read previously that theire were missing census pages. How can I check whether there are some which may be of interest to me? I know that this seems a bit confused but hope that someone has some suggestions. In the event that the census pages are indeed missing how then would I track these families? They were piddle poor people who led attrociously poverty-stricken lives so I doubt that they were in business - at least legal ones. But they may have voted (long shot) so where would the electoral roll records be kept for this period, if in fact they still exist. Thanks Rita
