Hello Lyn, As there was an inquest, maybe you could get the coroner's records or a local newspaper article from the local record office about the death which may give more clues about Patrick? Regards Cherie

One of my ancestors stated her father was deceased on her wedding certificate but he wasnt - from the way things were I believe he was estranged and she obviously wanted him to be dead. not sure if this helps

You may be able to find Union records to establish when the 1901 Patrick entered their care. I have seen a record of next of kin on some union registers too.

Gwyn Why oh why didn't think of that??? LOL! The address was 33 Prussia Street, Oldham Road in Dec 1889. Gotta get ready for work now so will check back on this thread this evening. Thanks again for all your advice (and Kath too). Lyn

When Johanna died did the certificate give her home address? Who lived at that address in 1891? Perhaps we can narrow the time frame and then seek help from the local registrar incase the death registration never made it onto the master GRO.

Kath & Gwyn Now I know the other reason I discounted it, my Patrick was born around 1842 (26 on marriage cert in 1868). And yes, he was born in Tipperary!! I thought it was a coincidence at the time. Possibly they are related but the age is much too far out for it to be my Patrick. Thanks for your help anyway. Lyn

I am only going by the online index which shows Patrick HUMPHREYS, 73 born in Ireland, living in Crumpsall as a cooper.

Have saved the image for the Patrick Humphreys that Gwyneth found in 1901. He's 73 and in the Prestwich Union Workhouse, born Ireland and described as retired Cooper. If you know when he was born you will be able to tell if the age is about right to be your man. Kath. x

I wonder if he WAS dead when the son married. There is a Patrick HUMPHREYS, a cooper on the 1901 census.

Hi Lyn I've checked on 1837online for a death for Patrick from the qtr. Johanna died to the end of 1891 and can't find anything. With a name like Patrick, did he happen to come from Ireland and could he have gone back and died there? Kath. x

I would think so, as if he was dead it should say 'widow of'. Kath. x

My GGGrandmother Johanna Humphreys (nee Armstrong) died in 1889, in the Occupation section it says 'Wife of Patrick Humphreys a Cooper'. In the informant section says 'Certificate received from Sidney Smith, Deputy Coroner for Manchester, Inquest held 4 Dec 1889'. Does that mean Patrick is still alive? Lyn
