Original Added by Jo Jo on 25/05/2005 23:58:17 ''Do I have the same family?'' The ages, place of birth and even names are changing. I know that my Violetta was born in Markfield and that the family were showmen and hawkers. I have sent for birth, marriage and death certificates for Violetta. She married William Henry Charles Jerrison 1908 in Loughborough and died in childbirth 1918 in Doncaster. Her son Walter lived for 3 months and died in 1919. She had as far as I know 5 previous children, four survived into their eighties, one died when she was about four, but can find no details for her. In the 1891 census the details are Caravan, The Race Course, Burton Lazars Leics Henry Bates age 30 born Derby Travelling showman Hannah Bates age 28 born Derby Henry Bates age 10 born Derby George Bates age 7 born Kegworth Violetta Bates age 3 born Markfield Annie Bates age 5 months born Old Whittington 1901 Caravan Breedon on The Hill Henry Bates age 52 born Leicester Hawker Rosana Bates age 44 born England Hawker Henry Bates age 18 born Burton Staffs George Bates age 15 born Kegworth Violetta Bates age 13 born Markfield Annie Bates age 10 born New Whittington Elizabeth age 8 born Tamworth Ethel age 6 born Ashby Walter age 2 born Hinckley Have looked in 1881, but nothing seems to fit. *MUCH easier to read..hope you don't mind*

The only thing that seems odd is Henry Snr has aged 22yrs, from 1891 - 1901 instead of 10ish, and also a new wife, but Hannah & Rosana could be one & the same. What are their relationships to the head of the household? It is Head, wife, sons & daughters? What does Violetta's birth cert say re: her mothers name? Sam

I cannot believe that you have found Polly, I have obviously been doing something wrong or looking in the wrong place. I have a photo of her with her parents, but for some reason could not locate anything about her. I knew that she had died very young, but that was all. I am so pleased that you have found her!! The rest of Violettas children I know about as one is still alive and my M.I.L. died last year and it is the information from her that I am going on. Thank you so much, I am so pleased that Polly has been found. Jo

You're very welcome Sam BTW Jo, I got the info from www.family relatives.org, I saw that Annie, the first child after the maiden name was included in the registration, was born in Leicester, so I thought there was room for a couple more kids before her, probably Leicester births. The checked for deaths in the same area Hope this helps

Sam, sorry it took me a while to reply, read your message, was so excited that you had found Polly for me, but then the baby decided to wake, got her back to sleep, but did not refresh the page to see your next message before I added my reply. Apologies. Jo

Just an observation. Best friend has a Rose Hannah in her tree. She appears variously as the above, Roseanna and Hannah.

Thanks, Elderly Tabby, had not thought of that combination of names, but very logical. Sam, after reading some of the other threads, get a bit paranoid as a 'newbie' that I am doing it all wrong. Obviously using the wrong web site. Think something stronger than tea is required! Jo

Thanks Elderly Tabby for the marriage information, will send for cert. I was so busy trying to sort out the census problems I had only done a quick search for a marriage, and then got a Rosanna that married a Henry Bates in Derby, which I knew was incorrect and stopped at that point. Thanks to you and Sam I am going to bed very happy tonight. Little things please little minds. Jo

Aaargh do have a second look at the Rosanna marriage. that does sound more likely: right area and all.

Elderly Tabby. It is the change in birth years and places of birth that has me totally confused on look ups and they moved around so much. Ancestry gave me 70 Henry Bates that married in the years that could have applied. I know that travellers did not like giving out any information about themselves, so wonder if they gave duff information on purpose on the census. The certs I ordered for Violetta should have arrived yesterday, whether they will help, not sure. At least the Brinkleys were also Hawkers on census look ups, so think you are probably right, the ones in Derby are not. Again thanks for all your help, its nice to have someone else look with fresh eyes at things I have missed. Jo
