Yvonne – I did find a Squire Hall on the same GRO page and I have a Henry King Brown but I suspect the King was just a mother's amiden name rather than a sapiration of royalty! And Sue at Langley Vale – are you sure that ‘ff’ isn’t a ‘ss’ in old script? I’m sure you are aware of that but just in case! This thread is giving me smiles every morning Thanks Sylvie

Stranger Taylor! The Taylors seem to be a pretty inventive lot. A friend is researching a family of them where 'Shepherdess' is used several times as a first name for the girls! I have my grandmother's maiden name of Gilchrist in the middle - can be useful in family history. Liz

How's this for first name. Just. Registrar probably asked any second name and father replied 'No Just Jill'. So her name was registered as Just Jill (Truthfully, found this on official documents) Just remembered another one from Official documents a boy named Niggel John.

TC, order the certificate and you'll find out. Just remembered my nan's middle name is Bertha, after her grandmother. She was born in 1933 in Dover - you can just imagin how much she hates the name now and why. (hit WW2, big guns called Big Bertha) I also have a William Williams and knew a child called Lewis Lewis. There should be a law preventing the use of surnames as firstnames.

Ann Report 29 May 2005 16:23

I am Ann Boyd Boswell, Boyd being my Grans maiden name. Not very unusual, but everyone at school thought it was funny to have Boyd as a girls name. I was at school with a Christopher Christmas, because he was born on Christmas day. Worked with a Mr Bush, who called their Daughter, Holly. When I said, I thought he must be joking, he couldn't understand why. Ann

Hi all, My father in law was called Victor Fortune Hannant - his father was serving on HMS Victory at the time of his birth and had been one of the 11 men to survive the sinking of HMS Fortune at the Battle of Jutland! The middle name Fortune did not, however, bring my FIL much! Lucinda

My uncle revels in the name Douglas Peace Colette Owen! He was born in 1919 after his father had served in WW1. The peace bit I can understand but I still don't know where the Colette comes in. I did think it might be after the writer but I am not sure that Grandad was that well read! Even worse, his baptism entry in our local church look as if it reads Charlotte!
