Hi Rachel, Thanks your help, what is the QE?? Sorry, bit new to this, have been watching the boards for a few weeks but havent noticed this abbreviation. Will local records offices provide certs if you know dates then? I read in a research book that they are very busy places etc and may not help. I have just used the GRO for ordering so far. Josie Where has your information for Moses bp and marriage come from? If you have seen the marriage entry in parish records, you do not need a certificate. If you have date and church only, see if the record office will send you a copy of the original entry. This may have original signatures, whereas the copy you can obtain from the GRO is just that - a copy. If you can't find Moses in the GRO indexes, it may be that his birth was not registered.

Josie Seeing as you know his date of marriage, why don't you ring the local records office to where the marriage was registered and order it from them. You only need to supply the QE in which it was registered and the spouses names, no reference numbers are needed. You could try asking them about the birth record too. They can only say no! My g.gfather Moses Skingle was either born or baptised on 3rd January 1841 and, I am told, was a twin. I have found him on 1861 census (age 20) and his marriage on 20th April 1861 to Harriet Baker at the Holy Trinity Church in Takeley, Essex. I have also found him (aged 40) on 1881 census with wife Harriet and 5 children Eliza 12 yrs/Moses 10 yrs/Frederick 11 yrs/Eva E. 5 years/Jane 2 yrs. Frederick is my grandfather. I have located Fredericks references and sent off for his birth certificate. I want to order Moses' birth and marriage certs but can't seem to locate his birth/marriage with the appropriate reference numbers. I think this all adds up! Dont know where I am going wrong with this one! Can any of you detectives out there point me in the right direction? Thank you! Josie
