Thanks for that. I know my James Cox has a father George who was a bootmaker - so If I find him in either of those two places I will be a happy bunny! Think I have to go to bed now...... Using matchsticks again!! Alice

Alice, have you checked out Happing?

Mad Alice Report 7 Jun 2005 23:41

kate - I was reading stratford as Thalford! and attaching it to James - not his wife - but you are probably right - it is Stratford! So still need to find out where Lapping is! alice

In that case, could it be Happing? There is a district called Tunstead and Happing the other side of Norwich (north).

Sorry but I still don't get what you mean about Lapping Thetford, if we are talking about the 1871, James' birthplace is Norfolk Lapping and his wife's on the next line is Essex Stratford. I can't see Thetford anywhere! Kate.

Well Im a norfolk dumpling and cant think of anywhere called Lapping. Certainly Larling is near Thetford as is Harling.

kate If you look at image on left it is written in different writing loos like lapping thalford - but could be Thetford? Alice

I see his occupation is Smith on the 1871 so it looks promising. I don't understand why you say the image has 'Lapping Thetford', though. Anyway, to be certain you would have to get both marriage certificates and check his father's name and occupation match, especially as James Cox is a relatively common name. Kate.

Kate On 1861 he is a Blacksmith as he is on daughter Mary- anne's Marriage cert. In 1871 he is a smith so I guess it is close enough? Alice

Nell i have only discovered no 2 tonight - and am hoping it could be the breakthrough i need - I always though I had Elizabeth(first wife) on the 1871 - so I did not consider him re-marrying - also could not find him in thetford Pasih records but Lapping is more specific so perhaps I will find him now... So I have not had time to send for certs etc... Do you think he could be the same man - still cannot find a james Cox with either wife on another census - perhaps he had moved to wife no ? 3 lol! Alice

Have you got Frederick's birth cert - it might be that Roseanna Rosa anna is his mum and it might have her maiden name. nell

Alice On your other thread re Lapping, I have just posted that Larling is on the A11 north east of Thetford. Have you tried looking for the death of James' first wife/marriage of his second? nell

(sorry it is sooo long!) In 1861 I have him with his daughter as follows: Charlotte Cox abt 1857 Greenwich, Kent, England Daughter Foots Cray Kent Elizabeth Cox abt 1833 Sydenham Wife Foots Cray Kent Elizabeth Cox abt 1859 Greenwich, Kent, England Daughter Foots Cray Kent James Cox abt 1835 Thetford, Norfolk, England Head Foots Cray Kent Mary Ann Cox abt 1860 Chiselhurst, Kent, England Daughter Foots Cray Kent Ihave checked Thetford parish registers - no luck! Tonight I found this on Ancestry for 1871: Frederick Cox abt 1867 Bromley, Middlesex, England Son St Mary Stratford le Bow London James Cox abt 1837 Lapping, Norfolk, England Head St Mary Stratford le Bow London Rosa Anna Cox abt 1840 Stratford, Essex, England Wife St Mary Stratford le Bow London The image has Lapping Thetford - so are they the same man??? When daughter Mary Ann got married in 1881 it did not say he was deseased - i cannot find him on any other census - but did think I had first wife Elizabeth on 1871. So ... Did she die? Did he just go off and live with Roseanna?? - or is it a totally different man? Please help - he is a HUGE brick wall as some of you will remember (sorry!) Thanks for your help Alice
