IGI batch numbers--Hugh Wallis site.......continued

What is the point?

The normal IGI/family search site will not allow you to search by surname only in a specific location
ie if you put only SMITH surname in the box you will get about 6 million hits from all over the world, but the site restricts your "returns" to a certain number, usually 25 per query, if you look at the returns on the right it will say something like"over 25" for this that and the other, but it does not show you them. On the other hand you may allready have some info that your ancestors came from a particular place, but you are looking for more in that location. Unless you know a first name to search for you are stumped. It would be very tedious to start inputting every first name you can think of, so the obvious thing to do is search for every instance of the SURNAME in that location.

Adendum:-
I should also mention here thet if you are unfortunate enough to be looking for a common name sutch as Smith or Baker even if you put in a forename the IGI/family search site restricts every individual query to 5000 returns...well its pretty obvious that even if you are looking in England only, there will be more than the specified 5000,( I have tried this with "John Smith" and sure enough you get 5000 and that is only from 1881 census info,this indicates that there are MORE than 5000 in the 1881 census alone!) so with the help of Hall Wallis site you should be able to search the location of interest, and possibly find those that have eluded you using the IGI/family search site.

To put it in simple terms the Hugh Wallis site enables you to search, by surname only, in specific locations.
Most people when they first start out are quite happy to use the IGI as provided by www.familysearch.org because they do not have any idea of WHERE to look. Once you get going and start gathering info about who/what/where
it becomes much easier. What Hugh Wallis has done is "break down" the massive IGI into country/county/parish and is some instances church/chappel, using the info provided by the IGI which is not available by normal use.
This means that if you know your ancestor was born/married in particular county or parish or even church/chappel you can search that location using the batch number that this site gives you.

Click on a country

Click on a county

This page will give you the choice of every town/parish/church/chappel that has a batch number asociated with it

Click on the batch number of choice (the first column is birth/bapt the second is marraige)

Enter the surname you searching for in the box and "submit query"

the result will give you every surname from that specific location

Hi everyone, I tried the Hugh Wallis site, but I'm afraid I didn't understand a word of it. Can someone with more knowledge of batch numbers explain it in simple terms?

Sandie, I would imagine the son owned half the parents assets already, so the parent could only give away his own share, and didn't feel the tenant in common needed any more.

Christine, I don't bookmark them cos I didn't realise I could! I thought I had to use the bookmark icon on my toolbar which is already overcrowded, I now realise there is one on this site!

Missed this thread...Great stuff.

I got caught out the other day on a census return, found my name, everything fitted bingo, then I accidently clicked on the next name. it turns out it was the same name, same place of birth and same parents names, same brothers names, but one was in the workhouse one was not. It turns out they were cousins. Check everything just to rule people out.

I have a will post 1858 and on it mentions a son
"as tenant in common" any idea what this means has the beneifacter leaves the rest of his children money exept this son.
