I've just come back to this thread after a day or more and have tried to speed read it!! So apologies if this one has been mentioned already: How near to Hove does Chichester reg district come? Death Q4 1971 Chichester Vol 5b page 1773 - Dorothy Ada Butt born 27th Oct 1904 It doesn't seem the right place if she died at home in Hove (is even slightly possible she was in a hospital?), yet there is a birth reg that tallys, below, but it's in Bristol - could they have moved? Name: Butt, Dorothy Ada Record Type: Births Quarter: December Year: 1904 District: Bristol County: Avon Gloucestershire Volume: 6a Page: 204 Best Wishes Sarah

Thanks for looking Kathleen, will have to give it some more thought.

Hi Trudy, Then she must have died before 1966 or after 1970, as I've checked all quarters of these years and there isn't an Ada Butt, died Hove. Kath. x

Thanks Kathleen But I know she died at home in Hove. Trudy

I've had another look on 1837online, and there is a death in the March qtr. of 1970 in Bristol, 7b, page 330. This gives Ada Butt's date of birth as 2nd Oct. 1901, which I know would be wrong since your grandfather was born in March, 1901, but it all depends on what the informant on the death certificate told the registrar. If it wasn't a close relative, they could have got the year of birth wrong, and it could have been a year or two out. Kath. x

Hi, Sorry, ust realised that after I sent the last message. What was your Grandad's name? and his parents. Carol

Trudy

Trudy Report 10 Jun 2005 15:48

Hi Carol don't think that can be her, that would make her born in 1894, which would be six years before their parents married. Trudy

Trudy, Maybe you should consider the possibility that her middle name was Ada and maybe the Hove death entry is correct. I had so many family members who used their middle names and no-one knew any different. It might be worth the gamble and buy the cert. best wishes, Carol

Hi Sinead Yes they are on the 1901, living in Hackney and my grandad is on there aged 5 days!! Trudy

Are you sure she died in Hove, as even though she lived there she could have died elsewhere. I have looked through 1837online in 1966 to 1969 and the only Ada Butt death I could find was this one:- Ada E. Butt, age 88, Sept. qtr. 1967, Leicester, 3a, 462 The only death in Hove I could find was:- Vera Butt age 74 Sept. qtr. 1968, Hove, 5H, 440 This might narrow down your search for you. Kath. x p.s. having looked at when your grandad was born, I think that for both of these deaths the ages would be wrong for your Ada.

Sinead Report 10 Jun 2005 14:52

Have you looked in the 1901 census for the family?Ada obviously won't be there-having not been born yet!!!! but the parents might be on it which would give you an idea where they were living around 1901-as it was taken in March it may well be that your grandfather is on it or he may just have missed it.. Hi Anne My nearest main library/archive is about thirty miles away, but it might be a possibility. Trudy

Hi Carol My grandad was born 26th March 1901, Hoxton East London. His parents were Ada Florence Latter and Edward Henry Thomas Butt - I suspect that Ada was their first daughter as, with many families of the time, down the generations the oldest males and females are named after the parents! Any help gratefully received. Thanks Trudy

Trudy, do you live near a main library or county archive? You can search the '1837' indexes on microfiche for free there. Its a good option if you have a massive search. A bit hard on the eyes though! Anne

Hi trudy, Do you know what year your Grandad was born? Just a rough idea will do if you don't know exactly .It might help others in looking for Ada's birth . Carol

Just phone the library!! Ask them if they have the books. They are much more likely to do a lookup for you than any record office as they won't get so many enq's. If thet fails, there must be someone on this site who lives in Hove.................! Sarah

Hi Sarah that's a thought, she might well have been, but unfortunately I'm based in Buckinghamshire and can't really get down to Hove without a great deal of planning. thanks Trudy
