Hi Mike, I can't find Francis on the 1871 census. Thought by Lucy's age he would have been in West Indies, (Bermuda according to Lucy's place of birth on the 1891 census). Kath. x |

I wonder if the enumerator made a mistake on the 1881 census and put 'writer' instead of 'wright'. On the 1891 census Francis is described as 'shipwright'. He's also a shipwright's apprentice in 1861. He's not on the 1871 census which is obviously when he was in the West Indies. I've saved the images for Francis on the 1861, 1881 and 1891 census if you'd like them. Kath. x |

i think it says (something) HM dock yard. not sure that it says 'writer' though. Lucy does appears to have been born in the west indies - that is very clear I think that os with a /thru it is an ennumerators mark jess |

on 1861 census hes a shipwright apprentice his father was a shipwright and they lived Woolwich Dockyard area . on the 1881 census hes living in Hampshire but he must have travelled about a bit it says one of his children was born in the West Indies Mike |
