Hi Margaret Social Services should be able to access your records. The GRO site has lots of info on what to do next. http://www.gro(.)gov.uk/gro/content/ remove brackets. I will nudge up the adoption thread for you, there's lots of info there. Ann x:) PS............If you type adoption in the search box, top of the tips board you will get lots of Adoption related threads. |

Hi, Give Social Services a ring in the area you where adopted and they will set the ball rolling normally if the adoption is pre 1975 you are supposed to have a counselling session before you view them, but as this is an unsual case (in the sense you are with your birth mother I dont know if this will be necessary). Bad news is most SS are inundated with adotpion cases so this may take a few months before you area able to view them. Best Wishes Sheila p.s Hi Ann, any news yet? |

Your local social services should be able to help you initially. Ring them , explain the situation, tell them where you were adopted, and hopefully they will transfere your file. I am not sure what your file will tell you that you don't already know. is your father named on your birth cert? jess |

Jules, i can't imagine this one went thru an agency, bearing in mind she stayed with her mother It does make you laugh sometimes, but i suppose they have rules that are 'Policy' and do need to be applied in the majority of cases. I guess at 67 (and under the circumstances in being what i call a half- adoption) it was a bit over the top. The thing is, when does it get to be 'silly'? 60 50 40 30....... so much depends on the individual, what they know and what they want to know Jess |

Hi Margaret,, We have one of these in our family,,,and it was not adoption in the true sense of the word,,,there was NO social services involved,,,all that happened was a change of name by deepoll.. to the mothers now married name ,.which then became their legal name to be used;;;and a re -issue of a birth certificate showing this,,,,but just showing the new name and date of birth;;;;but of course the original birth registration still remains on the GRO;; So did this happen in your case???if so there will be no adoption file on you... My second husband adopted my children. A Social Worker came to visit and we had to go to the Family Court for the Adoption. This was in the early 1970's. Nowadays, there is Step Parent Adoption and in Manchester it is handled by Social Services. Lyn |

Hello Margaret, I have the same situation with my own daughter, I married someone else and he adopted my daughter after the marriage. We had a social worker come to the house to take all the details for the court. My daughter is now 40yrs and is looking for her birth father, I am helping her and have had alot of help from the adption thread. Did your Mother give you any information about your birth father. Hope you have luck on your side. Best wishes. Pat |

Is it just me or does anyone else think it would make sense to have a separate board for adoption queries as there seems to be so many of us with these issues? |

In answer to Shanette yes/no/maybe.... would you look at an adoption section if you weren't adopted? jess x |

No Jess probably not as I would have no need to unless an ancestor had been adopted.I just wondered if it would simplify the search rather than trawling through the different boards.I always read anything involving adoption to see how other people deal with it. |
