Can anyone help me unravel this puzzle. I am looking for a Seth Ormerod b c1862 in ? Colne, Lancashire. He marries a lady called Rama in sept 1881 but does not appear on any census with her. Contact from another member says Seth married a lady called Annie in Halifax in March 1889 and again marries in Sheffield in March 1891 (convieniently missing the census taking until he turns up in Blackpool in 1901). This would be so funny if it wasn't so serious ! I think Seth is a 'neice' on the 1871 age 10. Cannot find him in 1881 or 1891. Help please, Joan

I doubt it Christine- have to go to work in 10 mins! The seth on 1871 , despite being listed as niece is directly below a servant called sarah Ormerod - is that his mother?

Thanks Jess and Sarah. Yes that is the chap in Blackpool in 1901. The MC I have to his first wife Rama in 1881 gives his occ as engine tenter, and his father named as John Greenwood. His occ on her death cert in 1932 says house joiner (journey man), he didn't register the death. The other member hasn't got back to me yet with more details. I think I will have to send for the BC of 1860, to find the fathers name then. I don't know of any siblings but the name Ormerod is a common one in Lancashire and West Yorks. Many thanx, Joan

i have drawn the conclusion that there is more than one seth Omerod. Some of the marriage smay well be the other man.tread carefully!! Looking on the preceding page, the 'Head' is John ORMEROD, 36, farmer, whose wife is Ellen, 30, and daughter Edith 11 months. Incidentally, in the 1901, the place isn't Brewiliff it's Briercliff - as in Briercliffe with Extwistle, in Burnley District. Christine

Don't know who fathered Albert. Albert isn't on the 1901 census but more children are. Also a boarder, who is my direct connection to this conundrum. The father is not named on these childrens BC's but we know the boarder is the father. He stayed with Rama til her death in 1932. Looks like I will have to send for all the BC's if I want to solve this. Joan

If you want to find out whether Seth was a polygamist or bigamist or not, you would have to get the marriage certificates to make sure it is the same Seth marrying each time, and also make sure that each wife didn't die before the marriage to the next one. Otherwise it could just be that he was unlucky with wives dying (one of my rellies was on his third wife by the age of 30, and the first two each died within about a year of him marrying them; he would then remarry pretty quickly), or that he lived with some of his later 'wives' without an actual wedding? I have the one to his first wife Rama in 1881, another member knows about the second in 1898 (no definite details from her yet), the third I will have to get because he married in 1891 BUT was named on the death cert of his late wife (the first one). I am related to the Rimmer's too, coincidentally ! Joan
