I have had this happen to me. People think they know where they were born and put the name on the censuses covering their married life but when you search for them before their marriage you can't find them because they weren't actually born where they think they were!

Does this apply in your case?

Frances

Caroline seems to have a lot to answer for! That's a good point about Robert Bassindale possibly being Robert Barr?? Occupation Farmer on Elizabeth's marriage cert.....Robert Barr was an Ag Lab!! Not exactly conclusive lol What fun this game is! Sarah

would really have been nice if they'd been full sisters. But I don't think it's ruled out that they're half-sisters. I've got a feeling Robert 'Bassendale' is actually Robert Barr, and she changed it to avoid explaining why the name she was using was different from both parents. Maybe John's surname wasn't Bassendale either, and there's some other reason why Caroline took that name, though I can't think what.

Doh, and I was so hopeful that Ada and Elizabeth were going to be sisters.... Sarah

Thanks for the info -- and sorry it doesn't seem to have solved the mystery. Makes 3 of them now. William Bassendale, Robert Bassendale, John Bassendale. All making one appearance, somewhere in the locality of Caroline Codd/Barr/Bassendale/Barnes/Kitchen, never seen before, never seen again. I thought I should back my own hunches so I got the death cert for Edward Bassendale 1876, hoping Caroline would be the informant. Turned out to be a Mary Ann Faulkner, same address. But there's a tease, just to string us along -- Edward was a gardener, the same as William the mystery Salford grandad.

Hello Joyce, Re Rathbone and tear to my eye - It was just that Jess had commented that Rathbone was surely going to be a name repeated in the family or maybe someone's surname further back....Then someone wrote to say that Rathbone was a ''Liverpool'' name - I forget the details, but that many families introduced the name into their family to suggest a connection to a particular Rathbone family in the area - a bit like if we all started giving our children the name Beckham, in the hope the glamour would rub off lol - So it may not be a family name at all!! (Sob, sob!) Robin - I was interested to read your last message - I do SO hope that Caroline is Joyce's Ada's mum - she sounds amazing lol Sarah

Montmorency Report 12 Jul 2005 09:45

update... Caroline was still calling herself Barnes when she married John Kitchen. Still not found in 1891. I'm hoping she turns up with a different surname, temporarily, as that would give her 6 different surnames in 6 consecutive censuses, which must be some sort of record Sarah found a John born 1842 in Belton. He can be tracked through the censuses, wife, kids, moves to Whiston near Rotherham, dies there 1919, never seen running a pub. Can't rule him out though. If Caroline as a married woman was going to get pregnant with another man's baby, might as well be a married man. So his wife forgave him, she had her kids to think about. Her husband chucked her out. Getting carried away now Could be Ada's father on the marriage cert was the usual fiction. He was a man called John who ran a pub, and changing his surname to hers saved explanations. But I'd like to know who the real John's father was, and if he's connected to the mysterious William B of Salford or the Barrs' neighbour Edward B who turns up later in north Liverpool. Has anybody got 1851? Louisa turns up in Almondbury Yorks in 1891, and guess what, she's got Mellors living next door. I'm going to assume that's sheer coincidence and there's no connection at all
