You're not stupid Chloe! Yes I think you are right. I haven't been doing this for very long and I get so confused sometimes, don't know what I would do without everyones help!

Maybe I'm saying something stupid - but could you not buy the child's birth certificate and see what that gives as mother's maiden name? That will help you find it and later help you confirm that you have the right marriage.

trouble is, even if you find a possible marriage and even if you buy the cert, you can't tell if it's the right one. As Brenda said, you really need the mother's maiden name as a checking point, and if you get that first, it might be easier to find the marriage

oh, so I should try looking for Henry or Henry Joseph? I suppose his birth cert would give me info. Thank you for all your advice, I will start investigating!!!

Maybe he was Henry Joseph and used the full name at marriage but the second name day-to-day. Maybe he just preferred Joseph to Henry... you don't have to jum through legal hoops to change your name - your name is what you answer to and that is a matter of fact. My given name is Christine, but if I refused to answer to it and would only respond to, say, Ethel, then my name would (de facto) become Ethel. Christine

mmmm, the plot thickens! Thanks Robin. My mother's cousin once thought that Sophia married a Henry, but when she looked into it she dismissed it as being 'wrong'. Maybe, it was Henry? But he is called Joseph on all the census's I've got them on. oh man, I'm sooooo confused!

as Christine says, Mary Wheatley is a mistranscription, could be 473 or maybe 493, but it's not 413. So there are two missing names for 16/413 in FreeBMD, but the images confirm that one of them will be Emma Woodhouse, when it turns up. So the wedding we're looking for, we're still looking. IGI's got St Phillip's marriages down to 1856 and there are two more for Joseph Rose, but neither of those has a wife called Sophia either

Thanks for the tips, Brenda. Will definately bear that in mind.

Hi Mandy It may be that you need some extra certificates here. A birth certificate will give the mother's maiden name. There is no guarantee that the woman living with a man on a census is the father of his children. The marriage found may be that of 'your' Joseph, but it is possible that Emma died and Joseph remarried. It is also worth bearing in mind that people weren't always as good as they should be. I recently found a couple celebrating the third birthday of their eldest son by getting married.

Ask first if his wife is called Sophia born about 1822 so you dont get the wrong one. Margaret

Hi, I am going round in circles with this one and just can't seem to go any further. I am looking for a marriage between Joseph Rose(born abt 1825) and Sophia(born abt 1822) (don't know maiden name) It would happened in or around the Birmingham area. Their first child was born in 1848. Many thanks for looking Mandyxxx
