i have used the links found on GR but cant find any thing. all i no is that my great, great granparents were called isaac and betty(madien name lowther) Nicholson. their children were called jane (1911), mary, margaret, joan and issac. jane, my great granmother had my grandad called john nicholson in cumberland on 13/07/1933. his real father is unknown. jane went on to marry frank fisher (not a traveller) and he adopted my grandad in 1948 when he was 15. how do i trace the nicholsons?? been on lots of websites and census' but no joy. grateful for any help regards, amy

Added by Dea Shaw on 07/04/2005 19:57:44 Have found a good site for anyone looking for travelling people - It gives LOTS of info, including 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 Census information for all over the country. Address is http://users(.)nwon(.)com/pauline/Travellers.html Put Travellers in the topic search box at the top of the baord. will bring up lots of threads for info

Amy Report 18 Jul 2005 22:43

OK , so how do you know they married? ( Isaac and Betty I mean) where was Jane born? was betty a traveller too?

Amy

Amy Report 18 Jul 2005 22:48

this is just what my grandad has told me but he doesn't no anything else

So your Grandad has no idea where his mother was born? You need to find a few things out. Where and when Isaac and Betty married , send for the cert and find out their fathers names. There are numerous Isaac Nicholsons in 1901, and of which could be him ( mostly in Cumberland)

Do you have Janes birth certificate? Do you know if she was the oldest child? Pat

sorry, not that he can remember. i've racked his brain many times and thats it!! i've tried for searching for a while with no luck. joan (janes sister) is still alive but is very old. she cant even remember what day of the week it is. she might have old records but if she had she wouldn't no where they were, and wouldn't no me from adam. it would been searching her house really-something maybe do when she has gone i'm afraid. till then have i hit a brick wall do you think??

The Bag

The Bag Report 18 Jul 2005 23:02

NO! Might be a bit hit and miss but starting with 1911 if you think that is when Jane was born, and radiating out, you'll have to start buying certs. at least you have mothers naiden name as a checking point

janes sister joan might have it but it wouldn't be fair on her to go hunting through her house. shes very old and has completley lost the plot basically. even if i do look there might not be any thing there.

Gypsy

Ok, So can you trace Janes marriage to Frank Fisher? Do you have an approximate date? If you get that certificate, it will tell you her fathers name (Isaac) and occupation, then maybe you will have something to go on for finding him on the census. Was Jane definatley born 1911, or is that an estimate? Pat

On 1837 online, there are 2 Jane Nicholsons listed as born 1911. Jane Nicholson born March quarter of 1911, Newcastle T (district) vol 10b page 133. Jane C Nicholson born June quarter of 1911, Sedgefield (district), vol 10a page 204. pat

i no jane died on 01/01/1968 age 57. i have this written down but i cant remember how. My grandad might of got the death cert for that. thats how i worked out she was born in 1911. havent got the marriage for jane and frank written down but i'll rack his brains on that one coz its something he might no

Amy

Amy Report 18 Jul 2005 23:22

that could make it 1910/1911 she was born, could it?

The Bag

The Bag Report 18 Jul 2005 23:45

So you could order one of those birth certs-for jane- you decide which is most likely and when you fill in the application form you can use her fathers name Issac as a checking point, if then it is the wrong one, you can order the other - hopefully you'll get the right one first time. certs cost £7 each
