I think your best bet is to buy the marriage cert with the reference Sarah gave you. As you have the quarter and year, you could check it to see if you can find Agnes listed. Don't pay too much attention to the Welsh orphan version. The man has been dead for several decades, and that's a long time for Chinese Whispers to run. |

If you get the marriage cert that may help to confirm the fathers names and occupations making it easier to be certain as to whether those census records for Matthias are the correct ones. At least the marriage cert should be the right one!! It's hard to give advice as to which sites to subscribe to when it all depends on what info you are after. Maybe if you could give some examples of what you want to find out and in what time frame and you will probably get too much advice lol Oh, but see Tracy in Teesside's speedy typing above!! Bet she isn't only using two fingers like me!! Sarah |

You have to buy certificates to confirm information. Do you have Agnes & Mathias' marriage cert? On there, it should tell you who his father is (hopefully). This can then be checked against the census. I transcribe (sometimes) for FreeBMD. It's very worthwile, and helps speed up how long it will be before the whole thing is done :) Depending on what you're looking for will determine which sites to subscribe to. Ancestry is a very good site that contains census information from 1861-1901, and is pretty much complete. Other sites it might be worthwhile signing up for are ones that contain BMD info from 1910. These include 1837online, TheGenealogist, FamilyRelatives. Familyrelatives is good from 1866 to 1920, as they are fully(ish) transcibed. Outside those dates, one of the other sites would be better as familyrelatives doesn't have anything before 1866, but the others go back to 1837. However, always check FreeBMD first. No point paying for something you can get for free :) |

Maybe I have got this all wrong. Its my sister who was told that Matthias was from Wales and an orphan. By the time he married Agnes he could have been an orphan. Yes? I seem to be asking quite a lot of questions and some more - Has anyone ever registered to transcribe for bmd? What are the most useful sites to go into to get info and also best sites to subscribe to. I don't want to subscribe to sites iif they don't hold the info I need Also apart from dates that correspond to the person you are looking for how do you know if that's the one - or don't you. |

I'd guess this is James in 1871, but it could be wrong... James Hughes abt 1817 Bermondsey, London, England Head Liverpool Lancashire Elizabeth Hughes abt 1818 Monk Weellen, Lancashire, England Wife Liverpool Lancashire Mary Hughes abt 1848 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter Liverpool Lancashire > James Hughes abt 1851 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Liverpool Lancashire Elizabeth Hughes abt 1853 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Daughter Liverpool Lancashire Mathias Hughes abt 1856 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Son Liverpool Lancashire John Hughes abt 1867 Liverpool, Lancashire, England Grandson Liverpool Lancashire Only a guess based on the Mathias connection. |

Ooooh !!!! Just had a thought! Look at the street name for the Hughes. Then look at the name of Thomas' wife in 1882! Same person???? Maybe not, since she's a Hughes. I'll have a look for James & Elizabeth's marriage. |

If you want their death cert's then you will need to look up the death registrations on a pay-per-view site such as 1837online. As you have the dates this should be quite easy!! (Lucky you!) Sarah |

Agnes Wright is too common a name to pick up her birth reg, so you are going to need their marriage cert to pick up her fathers name to enable you to find her on the 1901 census. This could be it: Hughes Matthias, Spouse surname, Wright, District, West Derby. Volume 8b, Page 559, Marriage, Q2 1916 Sarah |

Hmmm, Well there is this birth reg in the right quarter (and I tried Matthias with one ''t'' as well), but it's in the wrong place! Name: Hughes, Matthias Record Type: Births Quarter: June Year: 1883 District: West Derby County: Lancashire Volume: 8b Page: 362 Sarah |

Any tips on how to find someone I hardly know anything about? Matthias Hughes (my Grandfather) B - 20th April 1883 D - 8th February 1957 Family members say he was from Wales and was an orphan. Lived in Walton/Everton area of Liverpool. Buried in Kirkdale Cemetery, Seeds Lane, Liverpool. Children Elizabeth Agnes May (my Mother) Thomas John Henry Don't know what order children were born in |
