You are in luck, I got on the site, but there are only these details. But the warrant number will enable someone to find his service record; and the date of pension can find pension details at Kew. Date Warrant First name Last name Rank Number Station Reason PO Date 13/04/1885 70416 BENJAMIN THOMPSON PC B JOINED 18/04/1910 70416 THOMPSON PC 470 B PENSIONED 17/04/1910 B is as you might guess, Chelsea. Hi Nell Thanks for your response, I see though that you were having a problem getting the site too later on, so you may not be able to get it. In case: My great grandfather's name was Benjamin Thompson and he was in the Chelsea Police Dept. at least in the 1890's, probably before and after that. If you can still look I would greatly apprecite your help. Thanks very much. Margaret. |

Sorry peeps, I've just tried and can't get it either. I was wondering whether forgoing the password meant the end of the site eventually. But I will keep trying. nell |

Margaret I've not got any problems, I have the address in my favourites and it always works as a link. Give me your rellies name and an idea of which decade(s) he was a policeman and I'll look him up for you. Nell |

Hello Nell I have been trying all evening to get to this site but it will not display. I also googled and found the site but it won't open. I know my great grandfather was a policeman in Chelsea and would love to access his info. Is the site often down? Thanks Margaret. P.S. I am in Calif. and it is late so I am headed for bed, I will check for answers in the (my) morning. Be glad you are not here, it is 105 degrees!!!! |

Sorry Nell, Yes I was referring to the Police Orders one. I also tried googling it and still couldn't get in. If you've got time I would be very grateful if you could look up Charles William Wise who was definitely in the Met. Unfortunately I'm at work and can't give you exact dates. I know that when he married in 1850 he was a policeman. If that's too vague I'll be able to get further details when I get home tonight. Thanks Jane |

Yes, Nell. I've a photo and an article in there about him - my Grandad Benjamin Newton (1880 - 1980). :-) Joy |

Jane I presume you are referring to the police-orders one? I just tried it and it worked fine. Perhaps if you google 'police orders' you might be able to access it. If not, let me know and I will do a look up for you. Nell |

I can't make that site work - it says that the server may be inactive. Jane |

Police-orders is no longer password protected, so you can use it to see if your relative is included. http://www.externalserver.me.uk:8085/ You can search by surname (tough if you are looking for Smith!), and if he's there you can get info about when he joined, which division(s) he worked, when he was promoted, got a payrise or left. If he is there, make a note of his warrant number, if he isn't don't despair. You can find and use his warrant number at Kew to look at his service certificate which will give his physical description, date of birth etc. If he retired, you can check how much pension he got and where it was sent, as well as his wife and children. See Nat Archives research leaflet below for details of their holdings on the Met: http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=104 nell |
