An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 8 Aug 2005 22:41

Oh, you are all so good to me..so you should be though, after all with my connections to someone called Christ..... Minnie was interesting as I found a Minnie earlier on, bap 1821, illeg. (well, actually, I see I have written her down as Mivvie, but no matter), suspect there might be some complicated relationship there that was beyond the Enumerator. I really have an embarrassment of Greens now, wish I had started doing them 5 years ago, they are falling out of the woodwork. If I carry on at this rate I shall be one of those who has 5,000 people in my tree. What were they doing in Bury, though, I wonder?(Apart from breeding?) The Samuel to Maria Rathbone marriage is also interesting - someone appears to have submitted this family to the IGI but has all the events happening at Prestbury - if its good stuff, why havent they named the b***** church!?! I am still plodding through St James - backwards- and will then move onto Prestbury, if I can identify a Church. Thanks again - you will all have a signed copy of my book when it comes out; I may call it Fields of Green but I havent decided yet. Olde Crone

Jess, I expect OC is related to whoever the famous Rathbones were that everyone else copied to appear pretentious! Olde Crone - When you do your Catherine Cookson novel, I think your pseudonym should be ''Marjorie Rathbone'' - sounds good! Sarah

Ooh, thankyou everyone ....looks like its two diff Samuels - with a Clementine connection somewhere in the past. They did go in for some fanciful names, given their humble origins - Noah Rathbone, Rhoda, Lydia etc. Don't know what youve got against Rathbones though, it was like a shaft of sunlight - personally if I see another Mary Green I shall SCREEEEEAM. I have done a sketch tree for this lot and it goes back to my 6 x GGPS (needs verifying) Thomas and Mary Green, whose son Thomas Green married Mary, whose son Thomas Green married Mary etc - 5 generations of GGPs called Thomas and Mary Green! Thankyou everyone. Back to my PR scratching tomorrow. Olde Crone

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 8 Aug 2005 18:54

They say a problem shared is a problem halved - so here's your half! Fact - from Parish Register information (extracted by me personally) I have: Samuel Green (born before 1821, from his childrens ages) married(?) to Maria.(No marriage found in this PR) They have the following children baptised at St James, Gawsworth: 22 Mar 1835 Noah Rathbone Green 12 Feb 1837 Abel Green 26 May 1839 Eliza 10 July 1842 Ann 24 Nov 1848 Rhoda All give Samuel's occupation as Labourer. I have found Noel Rathbone Green on 1881, married, with a raft of kids. I have a bap of Alfred Clement(s) Green on 7 Nov 1858, to Abel and Mary Green. Abel is a joiner, of Macclesfield (as is his brother Noah) No Abel on 1881, but Alfred C. Green, his wife and child are now lodgers in Bury, Lancs. Rhoda is married on 1881. Fact: I find, on 1881, Samuel Green, born 1815, Gawsworth, a retired MASTER MASON. In his household are Alfred b 1847, Elinor, 1856, and Clementine N. b.1862. How likely is it that Samuel went from Labourer to Master Mason? Not very likely, thinks I. But - the Clement(s) and Clementine clue - if there are TWO Samuels here, they cannot be brothers (could be cousins, I suppose). And the children fit nicely into the gaps in Samuel and Maria's brood! Or did Samuel LIE on the census, to impress everyone? Im going to watch Corrie and water the garden but will be back about 10, when you will all have had time to think about this!!! Fuddled Olde Crone
