1861 census Salford Lancashire, Elizabeth Dawson (20) living with twin brother John, brothers Edward (18), Thomas (14) , sister Sarah (17),all born Salford, and mother Emma (57) born Shrewsbury, widow. On Elizabeths marriage cert (1865) her father is Mark Dawson but it doesn't say he was dead. I am trying to find the marriage of Mark and the maiden name of Emma (his wife). With her (Emma) being born in Shrewsbury it is possible they were married there but I am really struggling with this one. HELP PLEASE |

Do you know if Elizabeth and John were the oldest, or could there be ones before them? |

Hi Tracy, I don't know the answer to that one, it could be a possibility as Emma would have been 37 when she had the twins and I would have thought she would have had others before them. On Elizabeths marriage cert they have John and Sarah as witnesses so that doesn't help. Gloria xx |

It seems pretty likely to me that given Emma's age there would be older children who had left home, and that the marriage between Mark and Emma took place before the start of civil registration in 1837. It might help if you could find the family on the 1851 and / or 1841 censuses. Father is not always described as 'deceased' on marriage certs when he is. There is this on the IGI, but it is 'submitted by a member of the LDS church'. Still, it does have place and date, and I think a member of GR was offering look-ups of marriages at Manchester Cathedral a while ago - I'll see if I can find the thread and bump it up for you if it looks as though it would still be available. MARK DAWSON Male Family ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: EMMA HOWELLS Family Marriage: 11 OCT 1835 Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire, England Kate. |

I found these.... WILLIAM RICHARD DAWSON - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 31 OCT 1836 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England EMMA DAWSON - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 20 FEB 1838 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England Births Mar 1838 Dawson Emma Salford 20 572 JOHN DAWSON - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 13 JUL 1840 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England ELIZABETH DAWSON - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 13 JUL 1840 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England SARAH DAWSON - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 08 APR 1844 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England THOMAS DAWSON - International Genealogical Index Gender: Male Christening: 19 JUL 1846 Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England All extracted from records. So there were more kids, and Mark and Emma must have married pre-1837. I'd go with the marriage found earlier, and ask at the records office to confirm it. |

The batch from which that IGI entry comes looks to be all marriages from Manchester Cathedral with dates, so it looks more likely to be accurate than some of the 'submitted by a member of the LDS church' ones. Kate. |

Wow you all never fail to amaze me. Christine, Thanks,I understand what you are saying about the reliability of the site but Elizabeth was married at Manchester Cathedral so that looks a distinct possibility. Little Jewels, where was the death registered-Thanks Trudy, thanks for the list, will look further into the dates. Gloria |

Sorry, the thread offering Manchester Cathedral marriage lookups doesn't include the year 1835, but perhaps you can find somebody to check it or check it yourself? Also, if you haven't already done this, go on the IGI and search for parents' names Mark Dawson and Emma and you will find loads of entries, some duplicated, I think they are all baptised at Manchester Cathedral, and again I think they are all submitted by a member of the LDS church but with dates, and most are after 1837 so it should be possible to check if they are right. Anyway, it includes Elizabeth and John in 1840, so my guess is that the marriage is right. Kate. |

Kate, I found the web-site you mentioned and have nudged it up the board thread. Also I found another one which has an e-mail address for the archivist, which I thought would be of interest and have bumped that up also. Gloria x |
