I have a Birth Certificate for Thomas Sinclair born 9th November 1892. 9 Melrose Street. Newcastle upon Tyne. Sub District, Byker. Father Hugh Sinclair. Tinsmith Journeyman. Mother Sarah Sinclair late Stokoe formerly Ord. I have tried all variations of Sinclair, Stokoe, and Ord but to no avail. I know the marriage wasn't before 1881 as Hugh Sinclair was on the Census married to Catherine Garvin. It was also before 1891 as Hugh was then married to Sarah. They are also on the 1901 Census with Thomas. I need the marriage cert. to find if Hugh's parents are Hugh Sinclair and Christina Munro so I will know if Thomas is my Father. Can anyone throw any light on this dim subject ! Ken |

Sorry to say that even if you get the marriage certificate it will not tell you the name of Hugh's mother - unless he got married in Scotland. But if you are certain it is the same Hugh who was married to Catherine Garvin, can't you just get the marriage certificate for his first marriage to get his father's name? Kate. |

Jess - I think they would be in Scotland in 1881 as the son John is born 'about 1881' in Scotland on the 1891, and son William born 'about 1883' in Scotland. Kate. |

There was a really long thread on the RO board about this SAGA!! (but I can't find it now.) The potential groom (with no cert at the mo) married three times. The first and third marriages were in Scotland. The problem is that Hugh vanishes from the Scots records at the same time as this guy appears in the English records, but Ken needs some way to confirm that they ARE all the same person. The Scottish death cert for Hugh only mentions two wives (remember Scots certs have that on - good isn't it!!). Thomas (the child born in 1892) is (or might me) Kens direct ancestor. (Oh, whoops, he said that at the top - his father!!) Um....trying to remember what else there was ..... Merry |

On the 1891 Census it states that Sarah is his wife so I know he must have married her previous to that. He was married to Catherine Garvin in 1881 so it must have been between 1881 and 1891 that he married Sarah. On the 1901 Census she has Thomas age 9. 1905 He married again, (busy man) to Amy Jane Barrie, maiden name Lawrence. I know that Hugh's parents were Hugh Sinclair and Christina Munro but need to know if this one at Newcastle is the same one or just a red herring. On the 1881 Census it states that Catherine and Hugh had 2 sons Hugh age 2. John age11months and on the 1891 Census there is a Hugh age 12. John age 10 and William age 8 all born in Scotland so think these might be the sons of Catherine and Hugh. Sorry this is such a mish mash of names Ken. |

There are no deaths for a Thomas Stokoe between 1881 and 1891 in their 20's or 30's!!! (FreeBMD shows about 98-100% complete for these years.) Merry |

Think her first marriage is going to be 1879 Q4 in Hexham. One groom with two brides at the mo..... I'd never heard of the name Stokoe before - as you say Jess, millions! Mind you, I don't really know where Northumberland is, given a blank map of the UK.....ever played pin the tail to the donkey? UPDATE The entry for Thomas Stokoe is on FreeBMD but not yet on ancestry. 1879 Q4 Henham 10b 418 and her first names are Sarah Jane, like me lol DOUBLE UPDATE - the above should read Hexham, not Henham (what a wally!!) Obviously not a football nut, like me then Merry. Bob Stokoe was manager of Sunderland football team in the 1990s I think. |

Ken, I know you already asked about this death reg: Name: SINCLAIR, Catherine Record Type: Deaths Age at death: 28 Quarter: September Year: 1885 District: Newcastle upon Tyne County: Northumberland Volume: 10b Page: 8 Which for those of you who missed episode one, is a potential death reg for Hugh's first wife who he married in Scotland. If the death cert says this woman is married and the wife of Hugh then this would mean he was at least this side of the boarder (I'm writing from Dorset!) for some reason. Now, I know you didn't actually buy this cert - Can you remind me of what they did tell you at the reg office about it?? Merry |

I've looked for a marriage of Sarah Stokoe to Hugh Sinclair on 1837 from 1887 to 1892 and can't find one in these years, so if they did marry it must have been before 1887. Kath. x |

I wonder what happened to her first hubby (no obvious death reg that fits) I think perhaps he didn't die! (can anyone else find his death reg?) Does anyone know Northumberland?? On the 1891 and 1901 census returns there are several Thomas Stokoe's of the same age as Sarah's husband, but I can't match up the place of birth with the 1881 entry above, above above (would like to draw an arrow up!). Would explain why our Sarah Jane may not have married Hugh Sinclair. Sorry Ken if I'm making your father illegitimate at the mo :o(( Merry |
