as mentioned earlier why suddenly use it in 1861 census.?? not used in 1851 his first so is john abt 1849 second is james abt 1850 third is lewis abt 1853 wonder if he discovered something about his past at that time. is the name john a clue as to his fathers name.? Kate found a christening that fits nicely but neither the mother or fathers name appears in the childrens names at all. He has about 9 kids but none are called Robert or Margaret.

About that 'Lewis' - lots of people didn't put their full names down on the census but were more likely to use them for official registrations of births, marriages and deaths. For example, my g-g-g-grandfather Robert James Bristow, on the 1841 is listed as Robt. Bristow, on the 1851 as Robt. Jas. Bristow, on the 1861 as Robert J. Bristow, on the 1871 as Robert Jas. Bristow. His son, also Robert James Bristow, is Robert Bristow on the 1841, Robert J. Bristow on the 1851, Robert J. Bristow on the 1871, and James Bristow on the 1881. But that doesn't mean they both added the James to their names after 1841. They just didn't bother putting it down on the census. Robert senior's wife was Ann Jane, but she is listed just as Ann on both 1841 and 1851. Both Robert Jameses are mentioned in various wills and sometimes just referred to as Robert Bristow, and sometimes it will be corrected in the probate grant. Anyway, I still reckon your James Lewis Dunn will turn out to have been called James Lewis Dunn all along but just didn't always bother to use his middle name. Kate.
