Census.( RG 11 / 3154 / 106 / Page. 46.) She was married to a William Brett (27) ( Born Blaby.) Living at No. 9, Spinney Hill Road Leicester. Along with Annie & Florence. But didn't find a burial for William But there again the Boar War was still going on ? In 1881. John Page & Elizabeth ( 1846.) in Whetstone ( RG 11 / 3129 / 29 / Page. 22. (You have to go through Elizabeth’s details to get the census Image up ) Burial details:- Elizabeth Page.( Living at Blaby ) Burial at St. Peter's Church.Whetstone. Aged 42. 23rd. June 1887. ( Which is the year of Florence Page’s Birth aged 4 on the 1891. Census So Elizabeth might have died following Child Birth ? ) I see that John & Emma are living in Countesthorpe (Main Street) 1891.Census. RG 12 / 2497 / 39 / Page. 14. And John as changed his Occupation from Butcher to Farmer. In Conclution...... Get this…… A Louisa Page marries a Henry John RINGROSE … 30th. April. 1872. Whetstone. “ Not a lot know that “….lol :0) MIKE...' Early Night me thinks' ..>3 ii ~

Can you see if you have a second marriage for John Page I have his first wife Elizabeth Johnson 1872 but she died 1887 he is then with Emma in 1891 I think her name is Emma Brettnee.Marriage would be either Willoughby Blaby or Whetstone at a guess. Mike Thanks for your input again. Like the Boer War theory although it makes ggg'ma sound like bit of a flighty piece. Perhaps that's where I get it from ;-) However in 1891 she's back at 2 Denmark Street , describing herself as married, but Samuel Riley is round the corner with his children from his first marriage, so guess the marriage must have failed. How I wish my grandmother (who was 37 when Annie died and didn't die herself until 1986) had seen fit to tell me about this instead of the rubbish I didn't need to know! Can't find a William Chapman or a William Smith that even comes close to matching on previous censuses. Anyone know a good medium? Over and out Sheila

Hi Mike Thanks for the information, that is the my family of Timsons. I have the mainline back to 1714 in Higham on the Hill, then Burbage and by mid 1800's to the city of Leicester. What I am now trying to discover is the unknown details of great uncles and aunts and their families mainly from 1901 onwards. Regards Ken

Head. with a Carrie Freeman ( Neice) living with her in St. Mary's Nottingham on the 1891. Census. Unfortunately the Census paper is damaged and only the left hand side of the returns is left to view So not all details available re;_ Birth place :- RG 12. / 2694 / 144 / Page. 59. Thinking aloud now..... Jan. 81. Annie marries William Smith. William goes off to fight in the 1st.Boar War (1880~81.) and is killed. Annie remarries... April 81. ( Census night ) is living as Mrs Chapman.( see your post ) William also goes off to fight in the Boar War and is also killed ... Annie remarries again to Samuel Riley 1883. 91. Census. Annie now aged 45. living with her Neice Carrie Freeman. MIKE.

Hi it’s me again – back after a long period of lurking and still trying to unravel my mystery. 1881 Census for 2 Greaves Place Hunslet Yorks gives the following: William H Chapman 32 H Shoemaker Market Harborough Annie E Chapman 30 W Shoemaker wife Nottingham William Chapman 9 S Scholar Leicester Joseph Chapman 8 S Scholar Leicester Mary Ann Whitworth 4 V Scholar Leicester It was thanks to Mike that I finally found this. I believe the boys to be my great grandfather (William) and his brother. The visitor is definitely their cousin and their sister was with the cousin’s family in Leicester on census night. Annie (nee Bodycote, formerly Goadby) is about the right age and although she is otherwise consistent that she was born in Leicester, her sister Mary Ann (Whitworth) certainly thought from time to time that she was born in Nottingham. However I have a marriage certificate which shows that at Leeds register Office on January 20th 1881 Annie Goadby aged 32, widow, married William Smith aged 35, shoe finisher. Both gave their addresses as Cardigan Street Leeds. I know this is the right certificate because her father’s name (Charles Bodycote FWK) is correct. It didn’t last long because on December 23rd 1883 Annie Smith aged 35, widow, married Samuel Riley aged 36, widower, trimmer at St Matthews. She gave her address as the family home at 2 Denmark Street Leicester and he gave his as 77 Palmerston Street. Samuel Riley is a known quantity – his father was the turnkey at Leicester Gaol. What I am looking for is some idea of what has happened here and how the family come to be under the wrong name on the census. William Chapman doesn’t appear to exist and I have had no luck so far identifying William Smith. Anybody got any ideas?

Donna, Thanks for that!! I have a hunch that T E Butler the chemist is a cousin to my John Butler - Super Mike has been on the trail for me!! At the moment it's all circumstantial: There are a lot of Thomas's and Edwards in my branch of Butlers; There are chemists in both branches of Butlers; Thomas Edward's father was a Thomas - my John was fathered by a Henry - and it looks like Thomas Butler and a Henry Butler might have been in the boot and shoe business together in Cank Street. My John died young (age 34) in 1834 - Thomas Edward (born 1820) didn't have his own business until after that (he was made a freeman of the city in about 1844). My hunch is that Thomas Edward went to work with his cousin John, and that when John died and his widow Jane (nee Hollins - also a boot and shoe family) remarried a man called Thomas Snaith, Thomas Edward branched out on his own. It may all be a very fanciful story - but what I know so far fits that theory!! Thanks for the tip about the book - will have to get myself to a library!! Maggie

Census...Same as above for 1871. Census ( Croydon. Surrey.) Ellis Gilbert. 25. Clicker. born Leicester. With Wife Amy 25. & Family including Samuel aged 5. Born Leicester. 1881. Census Same details as above 1891. Census Croydon. Ellis. 45. WIDOW. Clicker. born Leicester. Daughter Florence born Croydon Surrey. Both in Lodging's No sign of Samuel.on this Census.... MIKE.

Hi I'm looking for any GILBERTs in the area, particularly SAMUEL ELLIS GILBERT and his father ELLIS, from the late 1800's to early 1900's.(my paternal family name) The Christian name ELLIS was common for the GILBERTS which is weird because without knowing this, we named our son Ellis! Cheers Allie

Hi Mike I have telephoned my mum to ask her brother for a tin that was left by this only child ....could be full of treasure or rubbish but hopefully there might be a birth cert and names in the right order and dates as all i have got at the moment is the surname Grant (would of been my mums step dad but are her 3 younger siblings father,he and my mums mum never married my mums dad did a runner after having my mum and her 5 other siblings) The name is John James Grant born 25th november 1917...his mum was Lucy Florence Grant and her husband was William Grant (or John William ) all i know is that Lucy died either aged 39 or in 1939...but i cant find anything ...so am waiting patiently to see whats in the box...lol...sounds like a game show. will let you know when i find anything else out . warm regards Donna
