When was the last time your hot matches was updated? Since I joined, I haven't had my hot matches updated once. I sent them a long winded e-mail saying that I wasn't happy about this, and what have I actually paid for except IM'ing, and they sent me back this; Dear Paul, We will be updating hot matches soon, Sorry for any inconvenience. GR.

Mine have not been updated either. I emailed GR about a week ago & have not had a reply as yet! Gillian

At least they didn't say, ''Happy Genes'' Gggggrrrrrr!! I have yet to see the point of hot matches.......five pages of people who don't match and all beginning with A or B bores me to tears within five mins! Merry

Hot matches is totally rubbish!! I've some definate connections (done through search) yet it says I have no hot matches. With over 2000 in my tree I'd have thought I'dhave at least one!!!

I have never received a Hot Match from GR but after a top tip from this board I found out about a step brother of my Dad's and found his Son on GR and am in contact-so I think the hot matches come from here more that from GR-highly recommended. Gillian.

I've had the same list for over 2 1/2 weeks but I've upated my tree and a relative of mine also has a tree on the site which has been altered recently but their new relatives don't show up on the hot matches as yet. Had started to wonder if it was just me.

Ann, hear hear. There are freesites that are as good - well will be when more people are using them.

why don't they put the surname interest against each match? Then I could weed out the Jones's, Morris's and Millers which probably account for 80% of them netti

Isabel Report 23 Oct 2005 08:54

My experience would suggest that many many people have received messages or believe they have made a hot match to the extent they send me emails detailing their relations or ancestors WHO HAVE NOTHING BUT NOTHING TO DO WITH MY TREE! But before I can be so adamant they are wrong I check and double check the hard copies given to me by the three third cousins whose research back as far as records will go forms the basis for my tree. There is only one branch which I would like to track down but the time taken by all these false assumptions makes that less possible - assuming I do have other things do with my life. There are SO many hot matches and names on the 'My relations' page which are simply false. The only rational explanation - apart from a totally crappy search system - is that other people can add to one's tree without one's knowledge and THEN when one tries to find a link between that shown on the screen and one's own tree - the link is simply not there/non-existent. Sorry to rattle on so long, but I am getting to the stage of being quite rude who lay their whole history on me and expect me to confirm. Why not just ask permission to view one's tree? I have had one request where the only link was the town of birth as if everyone in Sunderland (for instance) was related. Also confirm a distinct lack of reply from support. Oxymoronic?

Isabel - are you saying that some of the 2661 names you have in your GR tree have not been entered by you? Are you sure about that? I have never heard of that happening before - there is no facility to enter names on someone else's tree, even if you have access to view that tree. If I were you I would delete my tree from GR and then reload it, with only the names I am sure about, and am interested in researching. There is no point having an enormous tree on GR if you are only researching a bit of it. Keep the main bulk of it elsewhere (I use FTM) and just the bit that is your main area of interest on GR. Liz x
