Hi Elaine, I'm fairly certain that there used to be a Bluecoat school in or near Warrington, Cheshire. I know it's no longer there but it would have been open in the 1920's and 30's. Sue

*UPDATE* Have just received e.mail from Liverpool (re Blue Coats Sch) ......... Thank you for your recent email requesting a check of the Liverpool Blue Coat School/Orphanage to see if any Shawcross children were admitted between 1910 - 1917. I checked both the Application Books and the Admission and Dismissal Registers for the surname Shawcross for the period 1910-1917 but there weren't any entries at all. Obviously none of the Shawcross children were admitted to the Blue Coat School/Orphanage in Liverpool. There were other Blue Coat Schools apart from the one in Liverpool so there was probably a Blue Coat nearer to them than the one in Liverpool. Why not try a search on google and try and find out where the other Blue Coat Schools were located. Perhaps there was one in the Manchester area? I am sorry that I am unable to help you further. Yours truly, Margaret Daley Liverpool Record Office Oh well .................. back to the grind stone ........

There was one in Northgate Street Chester so if you ring the Heritage Centre at St.Michaels Church or the main Library, they may be able to give you info on it. Anne :)))

An Olde Crone Report 21 Nov 2005 23:06

I was born in Manchester and my father paid a small insurance to the Blue Coats Schools. If he should die then my brother and I would have gone to the Blue Coats!!! (Presumably my father thought that my mother would not have been able to control us/feed us LOL). This was in the 1950s and as far as I can remember, the Blue Coats was an orphanage in the sense that it catered for children who had lost the breadwinner in the family - always the man in those days, of course, and had an enthusiastic following amongst the lower end of the whitecollar workers. 'My' Blue Coats was in Cheetham Hill, but as the other Posters have said, they were everywhere. And of course, there were numerous other charitable organisations for those who were allied to a particular trade or profession - the terror of the Workhouse was strong right into living memory. Thanks everyone for your replies. Main problem: Definately KNOW Grandad was in an Orphanage ... he told me himself. Have recently found Grandad's brothers son ... same story, DEFINATELY in an Orphanage. The two brothers had run away from the orphanage on several occasions. !! But WHICH one and WHERE ?? Now it comes to light, that MAYBE it was the Blue Coats Orphanage ... and MAYBE in Cheshire ?? but the boys were born and brought up in Manchester. I have checked Blue Coats School in Cheetham, Manchester ... children not listed. Have checked Blue Coats Orphanage in Manchester ...children not listed. Have checked Styal Cottage's Orphanages in Cheshire ...children not listed Have checked with Cheshire Records Office and Manchester Records Office, and have followed every lead they have given me ... too many to list ... children can not be found listed any where. Blue Coats or no Blue Coats !!!! I KNOW that some members of the family did live in the Birkenhead area at some point .... and also the Blackpool area's as well ...... but BOTH parents died in Manchester ? I also believe that the children were in an orphanage whilst the FATHER was still alive.... and thus have checked all the Poor Houses, and various charitable homes .... such as Boys and Girls Welfare Society. etc . but to no avail. I have just sent an e,.mail to the Liverpool Records Office, regarding the registers for Liverpool Blue Coats School which was an Orphanage in 1910. Only time will tell now. I just thought that the poster of the thread I refer to, may see this thread and get in touch. Thanks folks Elaine ;-)

Elaine, I think there were many blue coats schools throughout England, as they were founded and endowed by a charitable organisation. Jay

.......... ..... Could you PLEASE get in touch. My Grandfather 'supposedly' was either at the Blue Coats School .. or ... ended up at 'Blue Coats Orphanage'. I have been trying for years to find out information on this .... and the last 4 weeks I have been going round in circle's, making enquiries all over the place, but everywhere leads me to a blank. I know I read a thread ( I think on Records Office - but could have been here on Tips Board ) ...during the last few weeks, wherein the poster refered to the Blue Coats.... I had every intention of contacting the poster, ... but forgot. If it was YOU, or you have any info / advice on 'Blue Coats ..., then I really would appreciate hearing from you. I am really stuck. Elaine ;-)
