Is Butler her maiden name? Is Minnie short for something else? Have you found any Butler female births that could be her? Have you checked 1909 and 1911? nell

where have you sourced her birth date please. Like wise her name 'Minnie' -if she was known as Minnie by the person that registered her death, it wouldnt mean her name wasn't really Millicent or something similar

Ancestry takes their bmds from Freebmd, so if its after 1910 the chances are it won't be there. You would need to check the GRO indexes, which if you want to do online means either familyrelatives or 1837online, both payperview. Alternatively, you can look at the indexes in a library/archive which has them on microfiche or in the original big index books at the Family Records Centre in London. nell Ooops, Jess has got there! Well done.

One of mine caused me probs cos she is on census as Minnie. Turned out she was Ellen. Mum was also Ellen so I can only think its a pet name if there are two of them in the family? Check out Beatrice as her mums name?

Perhaps Beatrice is Minnie and was just called Minnie as a girl because it rhymed with her big sister Winnie? nell

Karen sems to know who she married - or at least the fact that he was a civillian - maybe that is the way to go with the marriage cert of Minnie, to see her fathers name... and her name!

kaz in kent Report 11 Dec 2005 19:26

jess minnie was married to reginald william jamieson and at a guess she may have married late 1920s or early 1930s in aldershot on her death certificate her name is minnie beatrice jamieson maiden name butler . she has never been known as anything other then minnie within the family.

My grt grt grt grandmother was known as Minnie thru census's and even on her marriage cert but her birth name was Wilhelmina. Personally i'm not that surprised that she went by Minnie. Mhairi

I think its quite possible the birth wasn't registered with the name Minnie. I'd be tempted to go for a Beatrice, with or without any other names. I've got several birth certs with names somewhat different from census information, (usually second names used as first names). Do you have any other information you can use as a checking point? Sounds like you need the marriage certificate. Who registered the death - how well did they know her? Even close family can make mistakes. Just got the death cert for my gg grandmother, in 1917. It was registered by her granddaughter who was 21. She's described as ''widow of'' but the husband's first name is incorrect. He died when granddaughter was very young, so she'd never known him. [Good job I'd already found her marriage certificate, or I'd still be banging my head against a brick wall trying to sort THAT!]
