Thanks Elaine - I'd already looked at that site, which has been posted on here before. It's a good site, but unfortunately none of the pubs I've been looking for are on it! The site owner offers to find details of pubs and licensees, and I've already e-mailed him about another one, in Shropshire. I'm starting to find so many publicans in my tree that I may have to buy the book about licensed victuallers.

Hi Mary I had a great aunt who had pubs in Leicester when I was younger. I am going to have to ask my uncle for names as he did tell me he used to work for her but I hadn't thought of looking into that yet up to now, still trying to sort out who what when why for all my tree! Elaine

Oops , I was wrong. The 1881 census gives the name of the pub as the Lawyers Arms, but I looked it up in a trade directory, and it turns out to be the Sawyers Arms. It is indeed on the Midlands pub site, and the only licensee listed is my ancestor!

The Charnwood Estate was mostly off to the left hand side of the Humberstone Road.going towards Town Spinney Hill Road, Frank Street, Newby Street, Preston Street. St. Saviour's Road, Shenton Street, Flint Street, Farnham Street, Then came the L.M.S. Railway Bridge & Humberstone Road Station. I did come back from Church today via Constance Road the houses are still as you would remember them... Terraced Unfortunately I had to keep my eyes on the road so not able to get a good look at No. 2. But will have another try soon. MIKE.

Mike If you're going to the Records Office shortly, could I ask you a huge favour of a lookup please? Lou very kindly looked in Loughborough Library at the copies of Shepshed Parish Registers and it's turned out to be a bit of a puzzler. If you've got time to do it, perhaps you could let me know and I'll give you all the details? Many, many thanks! Mandy in Somerset

Father George Cooper mother Hannah Cooper formerly Rowley - so far so good. Why then is he down as Jack Cooper on the 1901 census ? Could he have been baptised Ernest Jack Cooper ? Wow, Mike, you have been busy, that's great! James Ortraymur. Illegitimate Son of Mary Smith of Upper Conduit Street. A line through the Father’s Occupation. A. R. Harrison. Curate. On first reading I thought A.R. Harrison, Curate was the father :-) I take it Mary Smith's dob and parents weren't given? It's very frustrating not knowing who she was, because Ortraymur's such an unusual name I'm sure he must be related to my Ortraymur Brewin. I suppose Ortraymur's dad Francis Brewin could have been the father. He and his wife Virtue were living in Upper Conduit Street at the time of the 1851 census. James was born in 1852, and Ortraymur Brewin in 1853, and Francis and Virtue seem to have separated at some point. Thanks for the confirmation of the licensees of the Sawyers' arms, who were husband and wife. If you have time next time you go, and it isn't asking too much, I'm still interested in details of Ortraymur's Brewin's wife Belle. Hope you got your computer sorted. Mary
