Well, a certain member of my family said his granny was most opposed to any of her children having sex before marriage, and guess who turned out to have been pregnant when she got married?! Kate.

Sorry peeps, I've been out shopping! Merry is right, lots of folk spent ages looking for Emma and Thomas in 1871 only to find them as Marthers! Emma's sister is not Thorne, but Moore. Emma was born in Cambridge in 1843. I know that the stepchildren are hers, Thomas Emmets Matthews is named after his father Thomas and grandfather Emmets. Annie Eliza is my grandmother. I think that a) either they never married, though I don't know why not or b) they married somewhere in London NOT Islington or Greenwich and the certificate copy never got to the GRO. I think it odd that they didn't marry, if that's the case. My dad said his grannie (Emma) was very correct & proper. On the other hand, I can't find that she ever had any of her children baptised either. nell

dunno if this mite help but my gg grandmother called herself blatchley yet we couldnt find a marraige cert for her then when we cross referenced her childrens birth certificates and marraige certs we discovered the likely hood of her being married to my grt grt grandad were very very slim she had in fact told a few lies and caused myself and my cousins hubby a BIG headache so it mite be worth doing some cross referencing maybe she was never married ??????????????

Hi Helen, Just a thought? The children on the 1881 census are down as son/daughter to head, and not step/son daughter, are you sure that Emma wife to john is the same Emma who was married to Thomas? do you have them on 1871census with thomas Roy

I know a family called Glarvey, which probably originated from Garvey. Could it be worth a try to see if your John is called Glarvey at all?? Good luck. Dianne xx

Might he have been married to someone else already and therefore unable to marry your great-grandmother? Into his 30's.....most men were hitched by then (except my g-grandfather who escaped until he was 57! LOL) Trouble is, if that had happened, then his first marriage could have been anywhere, given his occupation :O(( At least his name isn't too common though....... Merry

Emma Moore married Thomas Matthews at Islington parish church 1st May 1865. They had children, including my grandmother. They lived all their married life in Lower Holloway, Islington. 1st May 1879 Thomas dropped dead in the street. 3 April 1881- census night - Emma is with her 2 children by Thomas Matthews, and a new husband, John Garvie. Now living in Greenwich. 15 Jun 1881 Emma and John's first child born in Greenwich. Cannot find this marriage in GRO indexes - have checked from Jun quarter 1879 up to 1909 when John Garvie died. Have been through entire Islington parish register and those for Greenwich. Have run out of inspiration! If you have no bright ideas, at least give me some sympathy!!! nell
