Hi...me again... This is very worrying.... just checked on a name that is linked to my main tree and he's got those too! WHO is this person?...and why is he/she only got the initial 'c'?... Worried.....Sue

You don't have to give permission for Matches to come up either in Hot Matches or in My Tree Matches. The other person only needs to have a similar name in their tree. In order to let someone see your tree or vice versa, you need to make contact first and need to tick the box for to allow access.

Hi all, Thankyou for this thread....I've just checked my tree matches, and guess what?.....lol Seems i have approx 6 matches with 'c' with my 'Faull' name!!! Now its not a common name and I know that I have not opened my tree to him! So where did those matches come from? Sue Ps.... none of the names has a place of birth!

Can I ask why it is we think the system might have been hacked into? What evidence is there? Rosi, click on my contact on the left hand side to see who you have been in touch with and whose trees you can see

Didn't it used to be possible to check the names of the people to whom you have given permission to view your tree? I am happy to share what info I have if I am sure there is a genuine connection, and when some one enquires I try to establish this first before giving permission to view. Even then - am not too sure I want a very remotely connected non direct or blood line person/s to have full access and would prefer just to give them the relevant names. Cannot seem to find the page now to check who has accessto view my tree - but seem to have permission to look at loads of trees that I am certain I have never requested and have never looked at! What is going on here? Something to do with the ITV takeover d'youthink?

I'v just found two name in the space of ten seconds - pity there is no place of birth as I was hoping for a match. Given the missing place names then he has obviously loaded it from from a file - but perhaps GR should reject files where there more than a certain No of records, or more importantly, where more than a certain proportion, say 10% have incomplete data? Has this gentleman 'C' actually comitted any 'offence', or contravened the sites T's and C's, other than becoming a topic for conversation?

I've responded to Georgina Casserby's question:- ' Have you checked your tree matches this morning?' posted today 29/12/05 , 10:42:05 which covers the same subject/problem but on the 'General Topics' message board . It would be helpful if you all read the 16 or so replies and responded like I have done by emailing GenesReunited via their 'report abuse' facility on their home page. I referred GenesReunited to the the General Topics board, in particular to my comments posted 29/12/05, 15: 34: 05 ( which forms the basis of my complaint to GR). If we all want to see the end to such practices by ' C. Hewison ' and the like then I would appeal to you all to complain to GR through their 'report abuse' facility as I have done and referring them to the aforementioned message boards. Perhaps then GR will perform a meaningful investigation into their computer programming which allows such abuse to be carried out so easily to confidential information held on their program set-up and advise everybody concerned with the reason(s) as to why it was possible in the first place and what rectification(s) and protection they have put in place to ensure that this type of abuse is stamped on and stopped once and for all. Regards, Concerned User.

I have messaged C, as I came across a few names that could be linked to my tree, and have not received a reply yet. I have checked tree matches and he is on most of the surnames that I have on there. Though not one of the names has a birthplace besides the name. Gem:)))

My cousin answered a request to view her tree. The man made a very tentative match, he then asked if he could view her gedcom. The next day the whole family was linked to his tree, living and deseased (he has approx 5000 names). He included all our living relatives, brothers, sisters, children etc. It made me so cross as at one time had an input in our local family history society !!!!!! Kim My mistake this man D has almost 4000 names

I suspect that the person with a Tree of 52000 names would have assembled that Tree by linking other peoples' research. In reality, it doesn't matter to us how tenuous the links are to him, but we can assume that the smaller pieces of the jigsaw are likely to be correct. As an example, I know of a Tree online which can be downloaded as a Gedcom file and contains over 10,000 individuals. I could, if I wanted, add that to my Tree. The link being one marriage. That act may devalue my Tree as a whole, but the 2 parts would still be valid research tools.

Exactly, Dee!! btw I would never put everyone on my ''family tree'' on here. They are separately off-site safely on a family tree program. :-) Joy
