Maurice, We also have Norton & we have just gone onto the website for Bitdefender & after an hour searching, Bitdefender has found 4 Trojan viruses & deleted them from our PC !!! Try their site & hopefully they will eliminate the Trojans for you! Joan |

I had to enter email as I think they are called caches were deleted, also all cookies and all temp internet files. So on every site I use I will have to re - input my Name and passwords. I think it was Smiley central and yes I was mixed up with the Firewall and Anti Virus but all I meant was they are both right up to date and settings wherever they are have been set to the highest level. Today sod it, still Friday 13 my HP 57 colour cartridge ran out , Nearest shop as my need was urgent charged me £28 ! For it. In 1962 I bought a car for £20 which lasted 5 Years. Maurice. |

As one who is suffering from this problem as we speak (I'm on the library puter) I woukd pay ANY money to fix it! Whatever it is, has wiped my computer blank. It has also converted my keyboard to American and I cannot therefore use the @ sign - strenuous efforts to change the keyboard back work on the screen, but as soon as I close the page, it reverts back. So, I can't get at my hotmail account, I can't long on here, I cannot access any of my files. Whatever it is has also wiped off all my virus protection and a 'flag' inviting me to renew my Microsoft protection just leads me into an endless loop, telling me I cannot renew it. |

Brian, I'm sure your Panda is great. But as I keep saying most AVs and Firewalls will do a good job - knowing how to use them is the key issue and educating yourself to the ways of the web - including its perils as well as its pleasures. Maurice, the only website you are likely to pick up anything nasty is a malicious website not websites like GR. Cheers, Horatia |

I am using Outlook (rather than Outlook Express) at home, with Panda Internet Security Suite (Firewall, antivirus, hoax alerts, spam alert etc. all in one) and that checks everything in and out in e-mails and the internet. For less than £40 a year it's worth it for the peace of mind! |

Just a thought Maurice, why do you have to enter your name and password to access GR? Is it just since you had a clean up? |

Incredimail as a safe alternative to Outlook Express? I don't think so. It usually plasters a nice advert on all your outgoing e-mails with a bunch of silly smileys at the bottom telling people who receive your e-mails to Click Here. I had a friend with Incredimail and she couldn't see these adverts - her friends had to tell her about it. She has taken Incredimail off and has reverted to Outlook Express. The latest version of OE is much more secure than it used to be in the bad old days as long as you remember to turn off the preview pane (which is easily done). You can also make Outlook Express pretty with nice stationery; but not a lot of people realise that because they don't explore all its features. Maurice, You sound as if you can't differentiate between the Firewall part of Norton and the Anti Virus. The Firewall would probably be set at Maximum Security rather than the AV. The AV needs to have the latest updates (Have you got them? Do you know how to get them? Do they download automatically?) and yes, you could have had the old virus in System Restore which is why it keeps reappearing. It's nothing to do with GR! The Firewall and AV are two totally different things. By the way, you never did tell us the name of that smiley programme that your wife plays with? Was it Smiley Central? It is packed with spyware. By the way, at least your Norton is telling you have this problem, but it probably can't clear it because the virus is in a System Restore point. Cheers, Horatia |

Well I think no system is 100% Maurice. Have you run the avg7 again? Perhaps its something to do with system restore. Did you turn off system restore and run the antivirus system through? If not I guess you will have the virus stored in your puter waiting to reappear. |

It is Friday 13 - coincidence ?? or not. We again ran free Avg result all clear of Viruses. We then had an expert to look at the computer he tells us that the hard drive is becoming in need of replacement. After he had run installed and ran System Mechanic which really cleaned all the rubbish. This was all finshed by just after midnight. I opened an email from Ancestry .Com (no enclosures) then went to open GR and while I was putting in my email address and password. UP FLASHED NORTON Warning again This time saying your computer has been infected with 'asdf.exe Trojan Download. How can this happen ? If I picked it up from GR has anyone else got it. My wife thought it could be something to do with the date. Norton again cannot deal with it. NORTON is set at maximum security. I must say that Avg WAS NOT ON THE COMPUTER when the virus was picked up. Had I taken your advice to ditch Norton in favour of Avg, perhaps I would be still clear. I hope this helps someone Maurice |

I'd agree with Grampa Jim, I ditched Microsoft Products for web and e-mail years ago. I now use Firefox for the web and Thunderbird for e-mail. Both are free and both will stop an awful lot of rubbish getting to you before your anti-virus software needs to do anything. Matthew |
