Yvonne, you've brought back some happy memories for me. I grew up in a Yorkshire village in the 1950's and I remember every Tuesday and Friday afternoon around 4, the Hawker used to come to our street in his van. He was a local farmer and brought his fruit and veg to sell and also sweets. As his van arrived in the street he would always shout to announce his arrival and all the kids would have pennies at the ready to buy sweets excitedly shouting 'the hawker's here, the hawker's here'. We never actually knew what he shouted but I swear it sounded like 'rain te pie air, pie air' but I guess it was something to do with his wares. Aaaahhhh those were the days. Lesley :-)

No Yvonne, It's always best to post to the board first. 1. Somebody will google and get the response. 2. You share and educate the members 3. It is really funny if it's a dumb question I think this was a Cat 2 thread! Pete

Thanks Jim I think I had the completely wrong interpretation of 'Hawker' I thought it was to do with Fair or Carnivals. I should have googled before posting Yvonne

Jim Bristol From my reading of Social History it would be normal for the sons to be regarded as hawkers because in all probability their job was to travel a route through the local area hawking green-grocery Much like the man in a van does in some rual areas today with meat or fish.

Maybe they had a street stall, or went around selling their fruit from a barrow or something. - I think they would still technically be called Hawkers'. The family may have had the shop but the brothers may have been sent out with some of the stock in order to boost sales?? Dea

Sorry Beverley? The name of the occupation or the name of John Kearns?

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 12 Jan 2006 20:34

Thanks Dea But I thought a hawker was a travelling person? He is living with his family who are green grocers and has been living with them throughout the censuses. That's why I thought it couldn't be that he and his brother are hawkers

Dea

Dea Report 12 Jan 2006 20:28
