Hi Annette, I have Sharps/Sharpes on my family tree and the names were often interchangeable. Cheers, Horatia

Annie Report 30 Jan 2006 00:03

is it possible that the surname could be spelt wrong on 1881 census ie Sharpe instead of Sharp? if so i might have found Robert at 61 Earl Road Bermondsey one step nearer finding his family? Annette

This gives a breakdown of likely birthplaces in the Bermondsey area: Bermondsey Created 1st July 1837. Abolished 1st January 1870 (incorporated into St. Olave Southwark district), but refounded as a separate district on 1st July 1913. In Surrey before 1889. Sub-districts : Bermondsey; Leather Market; Rotherhithe; St. James; St. Mary; St. Olave. GRO volumes : IV (1837-51); 1d (1852-69 and 1913-30). Bermondsey, Rotherhithe (1913-30), Southwark St. John Horsleydown (1913-30), Southwark St. Olave (1913-30), Southwark St. Thomas (1913-30). Hope this helps. Cheers, Horatia

Bermondsey registers are held at Southwark. Here are their details: 34 Peckham Road, London, SE5 8QA. Tel: 0207 525 7670. This is where I got the information - a very handy website! http://www(.)fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/index.htm (remove brackets) Cheers, Horatia

Annette, Just to encourage you. I have obtained at least two certificates by writing direct to the Superintendant Registrar for Birth Deaths and Marriages(they weren't on the GRO index). You need to find out who holds the registers for Bermondsey District. I'll have a look and post back on this thread. Cheers, Horatia

Annette, Just checked. Registration didn't become compulsory until 1875. On the other hand, your relative could have been registered but was omitted from the GRO index. If you know where your relative is likely to have been born you can write direct to that area's Registrar of Birth Marriages and Deaths and ask them to check THEIR indexes giving as much info as possible. You can usually find the addresses online. The other option is to go to the County Record Office and look for his baptism. Some baptisms are on Family Search (the Mormons website) - have you looked there? Cheers, Horatia

Horatia Report 29 Jan 2006 22:37

Just to add that as Robert was born in 1869 his birth may have not been registered. It wasn't compulsory to register births until the 1870's I believe. Cheers, Horatia

Annette BMD's are now on Ancestry You can do this for FREE at the moment on http://www.ancestry(.)co(.)uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx remove the brackets You have to search the images to find the one you think is the correct one. They are not name transcribed; just the first and last name on each image comes up from the search result. Remember that the place is the registration district where the event was registered. These can be checked out on http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/index.htm Certificates can then be ordered online for £7 each on http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates Margaret
