Hi All , last night i was having problems with drop down box for entrying the country on the GR tree builder, following the advice from Grampa Jim and Valerie, i sent them a e-mail have just recived this reply,it might help others . Dear Ann I have just rested this and had no problems selecting a country of birth. One of our main aims when creating a new tree builder was to ensure that the place of birth data entered by members into their trees is uniform and make finding matches a lot easier. For example you have the option to enter just a county, or a town, or even a hospital where someone was born and some people enter Bucks and some Buckinghamshire. The tree builder now suggests possible locations when you enters place of birth. Eg, if I enter Liverp it guesses Liverpool, Merseyside, England. By pressing return it pre-fills everything and you don't need to do anything else apart from press save. While this new way will help most people, there will be relatives in your tree that potentially lived in a village that has now been swallowed by a larger town, or a village/hamlet that does not figure in the list of drop down towns. This is why you do not have to choose the suggested prefill place of birth information. You can put any place data you wish in the free place of birth field - such as a village, or the old name for a place. Then you can manually select country. The county and town drop down fields are optional but are a useful way of reflecting the current name of that place. For example, if some of your family is originally from Tranmere. Enter Tranmere in the place of birth field and there are no suggested locations. So use the drop-downs to choose England, Merseyside, Wirral. Additionally as Tranmere is now in Merseyside but used to be in Cheshire, I record this in the notes section, or the source field when the data comes from a census, under the extra details tab. Ann |
