Hi Saffron, It is good to go sideways. You learn a lot! Much more interesting when you go sideways as well as direct. Cheers, Horatia |

Horatia, I've got stuck going backwards, so I've taken a little detour sideways on the Waller tree!! I find the census images fascinating, but really hard to read at times!! |

Anyway, not that anyone cares (Tee-Hee) but James Waller is on MY tree so I felt duty bound to get it right! I have come across the word Teamster before on the census. James was my great-grandmother's nephew. Cheers, Horatia |

Andrew, You're right it should have been 1855. Sorry about that.:) |

Ahem, that should have been '1855'. I've never come across a census return before when the writing was clear but you still can't read it! Anyway, part of the reason why it's hard to read is that, including the crossed-out wording, there's actually three different descriptions: Farm Labrur ?eamster on Farm Ag Horse I'm guessing that odd word is 'Teamster', but that's not based on any familiarity with horse-related agricultural terminology! |

Fantastic. Thanks Horatia! I'm sure that's what it must say. Now I look at the end again it definitely looks like horse. So I think it reads Teamster on farm ag horse. Anyone agree? Makes no sense in English, but I understand what they mean! |

Bit more for you! What Was Your Ancestor's Occupation? Many of our ancestors changed jobs or held more than one job. Your farmer ancestor may have also been a teamster--using his horse and wagon to haul items for other people as a way to supplement the household finances. Cheers, Horatia |

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought of Hamster too!!! I like Teamster, I did wonder about that, but if your think it might be too, Susan and Horatia, then that helps. He was a Agricultural labourer, so I guess it would make sense he moved 'up the ladder' a bit. Strange one isn't it! (Horatia,of course I remember you. Hello again!) |

I've been looking at it and looking at it and the more I look, the more I can't read it!! Can anybody with some fresh eyes give me a hand. Someone out there might be better practised than me. I can email the census image or if anyone has a subscription the image I''m looking at is the 1901 census. The name is Janes (it's supposed to be James) Waller born in Wells, Norfolk in circa 1885). Wife is Emma. It's James's occupation I can't read. I've got the farm labourer part, that has been crossed out. Any more info needed just shout and thank you in advance. Saffron:) |
