I was looking at my great great grandfathers family today who hail from Jedburgh. Using the census of 1881 and 1871 I found he had two brothers but one seems to have gone missing! In 1871 two brothers are noted - James (12) and John Phaup (15). At this point John is an apprentice lawyers clerk. By 1881 we have the two Thomas' (my great great and great great great grandfather) and James but no John. I can't find a death record in Scotland for John nor a record in the 1881 census of him living in another household (thought he may have got married) so the question is - what could have happened to john? parents are Thomas Phaup - a tailor (b.1818) and Annie Douglas (1820-1865)
