im a little confused, it looks as though my Ggrandmother married in 1906 but that would make her 13, is this possible or do i have the wrong person? |

I believe that the minimum age then was 14, with parental consent. So either her age is wrong, or you've found the wrong marriage! |

The minimum legal age was 12 for females and 14 for males (with parental consent) so just possible. However, it was very rare for anyone under 16 to marry, especially by 1906. The minimum age (with parental consent) was raised to 16 for both sexes in 1929. Without parental consent, the age was 21 for both sexes until 1969 when it was lowered to 18. |

I have thousands of people on my home tree, and only three girls marrying at 16 and two at 17.....none younger. Maybe you are looking at the wrong marriage (or the wrong birth!) Would you like someone else to have a look? If ''yes'' then we will need to know what info you have about her. Merry |

Hope all is well with you?? I've just seen the Fanny you mentioned in 1901. Couldn't it be this one (below)?? Assuming you have only the father's name/occ from the marriage cert to identify her....... 1901 Bessie Goldberg abt 1863 Russia Wife Preston Lancashire Esther Goldberg abt 1884 Russia Daughter Preston Lancashire Eva Goldberg abt 1891 Russia Daughter Preston Lancashire >>>>Fanny Goldberg abt 1882 Russia Daughter Preston Lancashire Isarel Goldberg abt 1857 Russia Head Preston Lancashire Myer Goldberg abt 1896 Preston, Lancashire, England Son Preston Lancashire Rebecca Goldberg abt 1889 Russia Daughter Preston Lancashire Sarah Goldberg abt 1895 Preston, Lancashire, England Daughter Preston Lancashire This Israel is a tailor. the father of the younger Fanny was.......a mantle maker. I am confused!! I thought I was doing these lookups with someone the other night, but don't remember it being you??? If it was you, then fine! If it wasn't, then there's someone else on here doing the same family......... LOL Probably need my head examining?! Merry |

Hi Andrew, The second one is her, its registered on the Manchester Records Office as Prestwich Manchester Lancashire, i know that she lived in Prestwich as thats where she was on 1901 census, but it does come up as Cheetham/Crumpsall area of Manchester, and my Grandfather was registerd at an address is Prestwich on B Cert, so the 2nd one is definately her, i found her also on FreeBMD site, as being married in 1906 and some people on same reference page, came up as Cassell emile Banov, Smolenski Lopu, and Fanny Goldberg, all Prestwich Area, I am probably clutching at straws and have compeltely wrong person, so maybe i should just get the marriage cert and see. Thanks for your help. |

If you have not already done so, you need to get the marriage certificate. This will tell you Fanny's age at marriage and her father's name and occupation. It is possible that she was born Frances, not Fanny, or her name has been anglicised by the time she married, or her family had not reached England by 1901. Even if a precise age is not given, the certificate should at least suggest whether she is over or under 21. Good luck. |

Phoenix's post has made me realise that I also checked for names such as 'Frances', without any joy. |

Oh god i think i have got myself in a right old Tiz Waz with this one, On My Grandads B cert, his mother Fanny, is registered as a Ladies Mantle Maker, but i am almost certain it is Manchester Area and not Preston, but i will look into this, i had them on the 1901 census at an address of 60 waterloo Road Cheetham Manchester, then when Fanny registered the birth it was registered at 123 Crescent Road Crumpsall Manchester, its all the same area, I think you have done a look up for me before Merry, thank you for your help, youre great. I wonder if i need my own head examining for even starting to open this can of worms, i have decided that my family are very elusive, and either truly don't know anything about any of there ancestors only yhe living ones, or they don't want to tell me anything, granted i have no grandparents living, but plenty of aunts and uncles who seem to know diddly squat, Ah well to the drawing board and mountains of paper once more, i will re visit all my findings see what i come up with, Thanks guys you have been great, I really think i must have the wrong one, i truly cantbelieve someone would be allowed to marry at such a young age (indeed if that is the right person), i have a feeling its me having a moment..Lol |

goodness me i need a holiday or a large drink, whichever arrives first. I am so sorry to anyone who looked into this for me, i have completely the wrong dates, i have been having a moment, what with all these dates swimming around in my head, there is no way Fanny could have married in 1906 if i have the right one off the census, that would make her 10, i doubt they would have allowed that .. LOL Sorry for the mix up guys. Louisa xx |

We all get to have silly moments from time to time doing this stuff! A few weeks ago I carefully tracked through FreeBMD and various census the family of Elizabeth Bryant née Jones. Fortunately they're still related, but the family that I actually wanted was of Elizabeth Jones née Bryant. D'oh! Mental note: women use their maiden name BEFORE they get married and their husband's surname AFTER they get married; not the other way round!! |
