Member Since: May 2004 Posts: 2,077 Send Message	A popular sailor's tattoo in Victorian times was 'I Loved And Lost', written on a ribbon wrapped around a broken heart. That's probably what your ancestor had on his left arm, shortened on the notes to 'ILAL'.
