Yes I have a few that I've reached dead ends at the moment. The main one I'd like to search is Gill as that's my name but it doesn't go very far until I run into difficulties due to the sheer amount of them. It goes Ronald Gill (30/11/1924) = Sylvia Knapp (15/4/1930) John Thomas Gill (b. Liverpool) = Annie Gill Unfortunatley that's it. Although I've not gone through the freebdm yet due to researching the other part of the tree.

Ian tip from an old hand - if you get well and truly stuck on one line and can't go any further back - leave it for a bit. trust me - a couple of weeks being ignored and the long passed rellies get so upset at being neglected next time you look up they pop. I'd also suggest waiting until you get this certificate through - you don't want to waste time searching for the wrong information when you could be breaking down your other walls. I'm all for speed genealogy - I think it's great how quickly you can get results so fast online - especially with the expertise of teh peopel on here - but sometime syou nee dto take a 'Hamlet' moment in your research and wait for the info to come Zoe

JANE YOUNG - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Birth: 17 DEC 1855 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland Parents - John Young and Jane Hall. Plus a possible marriage JOHN YOUNG JANE MARIA HALL Marriage: 23 JUL 1854 Barony, Lanark, Scotland Now if they'd just married 6 months later then you would have been able to get both sets of parents. Mhairi - Thanks for that you've helped a great deal. I've used your details and done a search and it looks like George and Henry moved to London while Jane moved to Northumbria. George seems to be living with someone called Eliza. I haven't been able to check Henrys details as I ran out of credits on Ancestry. It seems a bit strange that later on Henry is living with a Ellen who appears in the searches for births and marriage as Eliza. Maybe she took the name of Eliza to stop confusion over here and Georges wife. Henry and Georges mother Jane is also living with Henry at an earlier point. Then whatever happens to split them up Jane (mother) seems to have gone to Northumbria. Can't wait till the girlfiend goes to bed so I can sneak a few more credits onto Ancestry.co.uk ;)

Mhairi - Why sneak? Because we're getting married in a few months and apparently the money I've spent can be spent on more important things. ;) How come people on here have look ups available? Are you all that flushed with cash you don't mind paying out for searches for other people. Are you that addicted? :) It's nearly 5am and I've just got back from work so if there are some people willing to search then the names you've provided would be great to wake up to in the morning/afternoon. George H, Henry and Jane in the 1891/1881 census or anywhere there's information really. I'm prepared to do it myself in the afternoon so don't go out of your way. *Goes to bed thinking about how certain people here have restored his faith in humanity compared to the thousands of drunks he's dealt with tonight that had ruined his faith in the first place.*

Ian I have to tell you something exciting. I've found Henry and Ellen on the 1901 census at 8 Baldwins Place Holborn and their neighbours the Noonans are my great uncle and his family! In 1881 Henry Young with his mother, brother and sister at 12 Mortimer St Marylebone. Mother was an employment agent, sister Jane a teacher, Henry and George both clerks. !n 1891 Henry is in Paddington with wife Ruby.I can't find the street address. I put exactly the same information into Ancestry for each census and he was the best match every time.

I cross referenced census entries by copy and pasting the info into an excel spread sheet on my computer. I searched for Alexander Ross (using a broad birth date range copied those pages into excel Then did the same for his daughter Margaret (I knew her birth range) then I sorted the information by the census page reference number column and that way came up with 4 hits where the two entries were the same - to actually look at the census pages. - lots of work I agree but better than paying for the view of each census page to see if father and daughter were together. My point is that they have the information in their database - it would not take a rocket scientist to offer a 'people on the same page' search thus helping broader searches for families - they could still charge I dont understand why they dont do it - after the data input has already been done! I still say stop until you get the certificate. Many people have been down this path, tracing somebody back several generations online and then when the certificate arrives they find out they have been wasting their time with the wrong people! They will all still be there when the certificate arrives! Hopefully, when you get it, it will give the name and occupation of Henry's father and then you can find his birth on Scotland's People which will give you his birthplace, perhaps you will find him on one or more censuses on Scotland's People, then you will be better informed to trace him forwards again to England. Found Eliza Helen Allbrook in 1891 with her family living in a cottage behind 73 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. Her age is given as 9 so she would only have been 19 in 1901. Perhaps she had to wait until 1903 to marry without her parents consent. She was the only match I could find for Ellen/ Eliza Ellen/ Eliza Helen. Her father was a chimney sweep.

I can't thank you all enough. I'm going to take the advice of Kate and wait until the certificate arrives. I'll concentrate on the other parts of the family tree until then however there seems to be a lot of information linking youngs all together. How far back do the Scottish registers go and how do we go about searching before those dates till we get to William Wallace or some other famous Scot that I've just got to be related too. :)

I think it is wise to wait until you have more info. It will be a lot cheaper in the end. As I have said before I do all my research on Scotlands people and after talking with others it seems to be one of the cheapest once you know how to use the site. Th e advantage is I don't have to send of for certs after 1855 on any of the bmd or census as I can print straight from the site and it gives a lot of info. If I can be of help when you get more info let me know.

I've just remembered I was told that my granddad Henry Charles Laurence (Maybe Lawrence) Young recieved an MBE at some point but it was stolen during a break in a decade ago from my grandma's house. At least that's what my memory tells me so it could be completley different now. Is there a list of all that were awarded MBE's.

Well well well. I'm glad I took the advice to wait for teh certificate to arrive. It arrived this morning and clears a few things up, ages, names etc I'm still not sure where it actually leads me though. Were we right or wrong?
